CHAUFFEURS WANTED MALE OR FEMALE (OVER AGE 25) RETIRED UNDEREMPLOYED UNEMPLOYED FULL-TIME PART-TIME Pegasus Chauffeured Motor Cars is a 6-year old Highland Park-based motor carrier licensed by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. We provide late-model Lincoln Town Car sedan transportation primarily to corporations and businesses. Our passengers are typically high-level executives consisting of CEOs, corporate directors and professionals. We transport passengers between Metropolitan Pittsburgh locations and to all locations in Pennsylvania and in other states, including Cleveland, Columbus, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia. Pegasus is looking for new (we will train) or experienced chauffeurs who reside in the East End of Pittsburgh or nearby. Following are requirements applicable to such positions. Clean Driving Record Able to pass full background check No history of substance abuse (Random drug tests) Non-Smoker Cellular Telephone Own computer and computer literate (able to send and receive e-mail with and without attachments) Working knowledge of Metropolitan Pittsburgh streets and roads and locations of major businesses and buildings Able to read and follow road and street maps well in unfamiliar location Impeccable Grooming Black or navy suit (men and women) Navy or black blazer and gray trousers (men) No health problems which would be unacceptable to our insurance carrier Pegasus pays chauffeurs 15% of the base rate we charge our clients (typically $45 per hour) plus a mandated 20% gratuity, or a total of $15.75 per billed hour. I once offered to call AAA to have one of these panhandlers' car towed for him. He said he'd be right back and never returned. So I asked him if he had any ID that showed he lived on the street and that if he did I would be happy to give him the money (no repayment necessary). He thanked me profusely, said he would be back in a couple of minutes with his ID, and headed off in the direction of his supposed house. I was outside for the next 30 minutes and he never came back... I'm pretty pleased with my solution. I was nice all throughout and gave him no reason to get mad at me and potentially vandalize my motorcycle later. I expressed my willingness to help the character he had created and I only asked for the most basic confirmation of his story and I did so in a "sorry to be untrusting" way. And I gave him a plausible exit strategy (aka escape route). Not that I planned any of it... [Highland Park] Hartwood Acres has historic tie to Highland Park

And if you want to discuss the historical details, pleased reply to history(a)highlandpark.pgh.pa.us directly. -Rudy A recent news item in the Tribune Review (on-line) reports that a brass chandelier from the former Flinn mansion near the head of Highland Avenue is among the articles in the Great Hall in the manor at Hartwood Acres where the ceiling collapsed. The article does not state whether the chandelier was damaged, but the reporter (who lives in Highland Park) confirmed that the chandelier was damaged but salvageable. I don't have information on when the Flinn mansion was built or when it was torn down, but it's there in turn-of-the-century (19th to 20th :-) photos. The only remnant of the Flinns now in Highland Park that I know of is the name of the "Flynn Parklet" at Bunkerhill Street between North Saint Clair and North Euclid Streets. And now you will find newer houses and Greystone Drive on the site of the Flinn mansion. According to the article linked above, the manor at Hartwood was built for by Senator Flinn's daughter Mary and her husband John Lawrence in 1929. According to the Allegheny County web site Mary Flinn Lawrence sold the 629-acre estate in Hampton and Indiana Townships to the county in 1969 and it is now used as a public park with cultural events taking place at the manor.

The scary part is this man comes late at night most of the times, and I wonder what he would do if people were not home. After my home was invaded last month, by the man who lived next door to me, and I know he used to lurk late nights, I plan on putting hidden cameras around to try and catch someone trying to come in. I felt so violated. I believe that if you have any kind of camera phone, that you always take it with you, so that you can capture this man if he comes to your door asking for money or anything. We need a good description of him. This person need to be caught. Let's all work together on this. Rick

Hi all, Just arrived back from a vacation overseas and while reading up on all the latest on Tony, I thought I should share the strange incident my family and I encountered late last night. Around midnight or so just as we were pulling into town after an overseas flight and long car ride back to Pgh, our car was approached while stopped at a red light at Washington Blvd and Penn by a gentleman making gestures and looking distraught about something. I was driving and because my husband was in the car, I lowered the passenger window to hear what he was saying and he approached. Initially he was asking where he could find a gas station with a mechanic to fix a flat tire...but when he got closer he started going into a lengthy story...that he was not dangerous...that he needed $11...my husband quickly told him sorry, we can't help you and instructed me to drive away - which I did. The man seemed harmless enough and was not aggressive when we declined to help him but the incident reminded me of Tony - although I am not sure it was him. For whatever reason, ( jetlag, fatigue, false sense of security) I had let down my guard and should not have lowered the window. We had our 3 children sleeping in the back. Just thought I would share and remind everyone that there may be more "Tony"-like incidents occuring around the East End and not only in Highland Park. Lori Rongier Farragut St

[Highland Park] House Tour Posters

We will be distributing house tour posters at the HPCC meeting on Thursday night (7:30 at St. Andrews). We want the posters to be put up in neighborhoods all over the city and in nearby suburbs. [Highland Park] The scammer strikes again (twice)

A young friend of ours recently realized she was a victim of the scam last week. She got home at 2:45 AM and a man came out of the trees near the corner of Bryant and Portland. He said something like ,"Don't worry, I'm not a rapist or a mugger." Our friend said he was really convincing, but she was scared and gave him 20 bucks as she rushed to her house. Sat. evening 8/13 he convinced a family in the 6500 block of Jackson St. to give him money. Apparently he should win an oscar for his convincing performance. They were totally convinced that he lived down the street somewhere!
