Hello Highland Park! I have some good news, some bad news and then some good news to report. First, the good news. It looks like Sandy's Deli (now remolded to be the Highland Park Deli) is open, but not selling beer! YAY!! It also looks like they have gone back to their deli roots, offering fresh cooked corned beef and daily specials, fresh bread, and homemade soups. The thugs have not been loitering around, and the trash and traffic problems have slowed WAY down! From what I understand, they have applied for a new license to sell beer, but it's highly unlikely that they will be granted one. So, thank you to all who wrote letters! You might want to stop by and see the new establishment and encourage the owners to keep up the positive growth! Next, the bad news that leads into the other good news...My husband and I were jumped by a band of 6 teenaged boys last week. We were walking home from the park on Wednesday, Feb 22nd. The boys, the oldest was 15 and the main aggressor, were sitting on the steps of a house on Wellesley between Mellon and St. Clair. We made the mistake of looking their way (the house next door to where they were is for sale) and they made some comment that we ignored. Next thing we knew, the oldest boy was running up behind Brett and jumped on his back, throwing a punch at the back of his head! The other 5 boys circled around us...luckily they didn't have guns! We kept walking towards our house, and the aggressive boy actually threw a punch at me. I found myself with a 3' stick and started waving it around yelling for them to get the F*** away from us...I'm surprised that none of the neighbors came out...(but a guy walking his dog ignored us...thanks dude!) They started picking up rocks and sticks and throwing them at us. Brett pulled out his cell phone, and I covered him with my fancy stick moves, and the kids ran. Brett followed them for a couple blocks, then I got in my car and searched for them. Now the good news...we FOUND THEM! Only the main aggressor was arrested and we will be pressing charges but we're lucky that they didn' t have guns. I hope that because of the action we took, this kid and the others who didn't get arrested, learned from this and don't progress to a higher level of violence. We can only hope! I am giving away a usedHewlett Packard all-in-one printer, an Office Jet of the hp psc 900 series. It's about 4 years old and was not supported by my Dell computer. After buying a new Dell printer, I was about to recycle the HP via Dell, then thought someone out there might want it. There's nothing really wrong with it, though it didn't interact well with the Dell. I have all the original software and information booklets. If anyone wants it, contact me. Otherwise, I'll wait about two days and then recycle it. Barbara

The annual and always-enjoyable Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner and Mardi Gras Party will take place at 5:30 p.m. [Dinner served 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.] on Tuesday February 28th. An enjoyable evening for good friends of all ages in the congregation and neighborhood. The dinner is by free will donation, and all are welcome. Decorate your Easter Eggs at Union Project! Assistant Stained Glass Instructor Andrea Boykowycz is offering a workshop in decorating eggs in the Ukrainian "pysanky" style. This method uses hot wax and bright aniline dyes to develop intricate, multi-colored batiked designs. This is an ancient art, and the traditional Ukrainian designs involve symbolism that's both pagan and Christian -- but you can use these techniques to develop your own decorative style and symbolism, if you like! Classes will be on two consecutive Saturdays, April 1 and April 8, from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. Space is limited to 20 per workshop. A $5 materials fee will cover eggs, tools, wax and dye. New call for volunteers Now that Union Project is open for business thanks to the help of over 1600 volunteers over the past 4 years, we are ready to take on a new endeavor with volunteers to continue the success of Union Project. We are now ready to take volunteering a little bit further by forming a core organization of specialized volunteers in addition to our workday groups. The Union Project is looking to our loyal and new volunteer base to join and form “The GROUP,” our new core volunteer organization. We are in constant need of volunteers to help the Union Project grow. We have created a revolutionary volunteer model which structures specialized volunteers into roles befitting their knowledge/interest. Each of the fields of expertise will be comprised of one head and a certain number of members. Currently, we are in search of individuals to head these volunteer communities. The communities (or groups) that need leaders include: Marketing, Promotions, Business Administration, Web/Graphics, Volunteer Development/Management, Venue Operations, Sponsorship/Partnership Outreach, Art Class Assistance (Stained Glass, Ceramics, Mosaic), and General Maintenance, Construction and Building Upkeep. As a leader, you will be responsible for coordinating and organizing your specialized volunteer community. We are looking for dedicated, self-motivated leaders interested in having fun while furthering your education in a real world discipline of your interest all while helping a great organization. Possible internship credit, practicum opportunities, free events and additional incentives are available to those who participate. All artists and growers are encouraged to contact us to reserve your table at market(a)unionproject.org as soon as possible. Each table is $7 per week or eighty-five dollars for the entire summer! Wait, it doesn’t stop there! Each week there will be an arts related FREE activity for children provided by a local artist. Also, the first Saturday of the month will be neighborhood celebrations with live music, free samples from the Union Station Café and games for the kid’s. In addition we will have local chefs teaching our Peabody high school interns new recipes to highlight on Saturdays in Union Station Café. [Highland Park] Quicken and Dollar Bank - NOT Compatible

Thanks for the advice and support on this issue. I got a good fix for this tax season. Talked with Dollar Bank today, they are not going to support Quicken and/or TurboTax applications. Their suggestion was that we migrate to MS Money, another "As Bill Sees It" application.
