- www.unionproject.org - Monday Evening Conversations We have had some amazing and challenging conversations and celebrations over the past three Mondays. During our final time together we will have some food, music, poetry and further discussion and activities that will propel us into the future of seeking peace, reconciliation and justice of our neighborhoods. Come and join us again at 7:30 pm and bring a favorite ethnic snack to share. Please contact hilary@unionproject.org or 412-363-4550 x 6 or bj@pghopendoor.org with any questions. First Friday Happy Hour In cooperation with Penn Avenue Arts Initiative’s “Unblurred”, the Union Project invites you to come to our First Friday Happy Hour, March 3rd from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Join us for food and drinks, a clay demo by Garrett Smith, and to hear about all of our new classes, events and developments. It is a must do, see you there! Kiln Building and Clay Classes Union Project is partnering with Carlow University and local clay artist, Dale Huffman, to offer a course in kiln building and design this summer. The course, offered for credit through Carlow University, will be on 2 consecutive weekends in July. July 7-9 and July 14-16. Details on the class will be forthcoming, or you may contact Justin@unionproject.org for more information. Union Project continues to offer class in our clay studio. Be sure to sign up for our first round of classes beginning in mid march. Details on the classes can be found by visiting www.unionproject.org/Programs/Ceramics or by calling 412-363-4550 x 2, or by emailing Justin@unionproject.org. Decorate your Easter Eggs at Union Project! Assistant Stained Glass Instructor Andrea Boykowycz is offering a workshop in decorating eggs in the Ukrainian "pysanky" style. This method uses hot wax and bright aniline dyes to develop intricate, multi-colored batiked designs. This is an ancient art, and the traditional Ukrainian designs involve symbolism that's both pagan and Christian -- but you can use these techniques to develop your own decorative style and symbolism, if you like! Classes will be on two consecutive Saturdays, April 1 and April 8, from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. Space is limited to 20 per workshop. A $5 materials fee will cover eggs, tools, wax and dye. RSVP to andrea@twirt.com to reserve your spot! New call for volunteers Now that Union Project is open for business thanks to the help of over 1600 volunteers over the past 4 years, we are ready to take on a new endeavor with volunteers to continue the success of Union Project. We are now ready to take volunteering a little bit further by forming a core organization of specialized volunteers in addition to our workday groups. The Union Project is looking to our loyal and new volunteer base to join and form “The GROUP,” our new core volunteer organization. We are in constant need of volunteers to help the Union Project grow. We have created a revolutionary volunteer model which structures specialized volunteers into roles befitting their knowledge/interest. Each of the fields of expertise will be comprised of one head and a certain number of members. Currently, we are in search of individuals to head these volunteer communities. The communities (or groups) that need leaders include: Marketing, Promotions, Business Administration, Web/Graphics, Volunteer Development/Management, Venue Operations, Sponsorship/Partnership Outreach, Art Class Assistance (Stained Glass, Ceramics, Mosaic), and General Maintenance, Construction and Building Upkeep. As a leader, you will be responsible for coordinating and organizing your specialized volunteer community. We are looking for dedicated, self-motivated leaders interested in having fun while furthering your education in a real world discipline of your interest all while helping a great organization. Possible internship credit, practicum opportunities, free events and additional incentives are available to those who participate. If you are interested in becoming a leader, a member or for more information about The GROUP, our volunteer communities, or the Union Project, please contact volunteer@unionproject.org or call 412-363-4550 x 5. Also, with the construction of our coffee shop, we still have volunteer opportunities with staining, painting, cleaning and general construction. Those dates include: Sat Feb 25th 9a - 3p Sat Mar 4th 9a – 3p Sat Mar 11th 9a – 3p Sat Mar 18th 9a – 3p Sat Mar 25th 9a – 3p HOMEGROWN SATURDAYS Every Saturday the Union Project will host the Mildred’s Daughters farm stand as well as a new component, the backyard grower’s market. All artists and growers are encouraged to contact us to reserve your table at market@unionproject.org as soon as possible. Each table is $7 per week or eighty-five dollars for the entire summer! Wait, it doesn’t stop there! Each week there will be an arts related FREE activity for children provided by a local artist.
