ADVOCATING CONSTRUCTIVE DEBATE Patrick Dowd will be speaking at the Union Project cafe this Thursday, September 21st. Everyone is welcome and invited to arrive at 5:30 PM. The program hosted by the Kiwanis Club of East Liberty will begin at 5:45 PM. Patrick was elected to the Pittsburgh Board of Education in 2003 and is committed to meeting the challenges of education reform. He resides in Highland Park with his wife Leslie (Lannie) and their five children. Their three oldest children attend Pittsburgh Public Schools. [Highland Park] Walk in the Woods in Highland Park

Please join me for a 2-hour walk in Highland Park tomorrow (Wednesday) starting at 6:30 pm at the fountain (Highland Avenue entrance to the park). The route and path are largely dictated by the needs of the group. The weather report looks OK for today's walk but the temperature will decrease (and--sadly--daylight will wane) by the end of the walk. Please note that information published in the Parks Conservancy newsletter is wrong: the walks in Highland Park are on the *3rd* Wednesdays throughout the summer this year. The dates are correct on their web site: <http://www.pittsburghparks.org/> This walk is just one in a series of the weekly "Walks in the Woods" in the four major Pittsburgh parks sponsored by the PPC. The others are in Schenley Park on the 1st Wednesdays, Riverview Park on the 2nd Wednesdays, and Frick Park on the 4th Wednesdays. In past years the last weekly walks for the year have been scheduled for October with only monthly walks scheduled on weekends during the "dark" months. I don't have an updated scheduled yet. Rudy

[Highland Park] HPCC Meeting Thursday 9/21/06

The Highland Park Community Council will be holding their Member's meeting this Thursday 9/21/06, at St Andrews Church, 5801 Hampton St, starting at 7:30 pm. This meeting starts the beginning of a new year for the HPCC and will include election of Officers and Directors of the Board. This Member's meeting is also when the committees are to report on what is planned for the upcoming year. The meeting is open to all (as are all HPCC meetings), so you do not need to be a member to attend. The HPCC meetings are held the third Thursday of every month (except December and July). I realize this probably isn't the most normal of requests, but would anyone want some compost? This is the first time that I've lived in a place without a yard/garden to put my food scraps, and I feel horribly guilty about throwing them away. For those of you who might be interested, there is a traditional aiki jujitsu school on Baum Blvd, just east of Negley. My husband and son have been attending classes there for about a year. They really enjoy it, it's affordable, interesting, and very traditional. Next Saturday, the 23rd of September, the school is having a demonstration at 11 a.m. for anyone who is interested in seeing the art practiced or in learning more about the school.
