[Highland Park] Fireworks response

Thanks to everyone that provided firework watching recommendations. I had requested somewhere that wouldnt be too crowded or loud as we had a 2 year old visitor with us. Hope everyone had a good 4th! Alison Bogle Flagstaff Hill near CMU The Science Center has a package that includes food, drinks, entertainment and you can watch the fireworks from inside. Schenley Oval is a good place -- you see the tops of fireworks and there's a play ground...and if you park near the front it doesn't take all that long to get out... And it is not loud. A picture online of the skyline from this part of the park - http://www.pfds.org/images/schenley_overlook.gif. Drive down Bigelow Blvd. as if you were going to downtown. Go early as it gets crowded. Pull off the main road up on to the grassy area its called Frank Curto Park Head down around 7:00 to get a good spot. One place that might work (if you don't mind being far away) is Schenley Park by the tennis courts and frisbee golf course. There is a big hill there that is perfect for a picnic, is far away from the insanity of the downtown fireworks mayhem, but you can see the skyline from there and the fireworks in the distance. It is a popular place to watch the fireworks, but not as crazy as downtown. I would suggest getting there well in advance of darkness...perhaps plan your picnic for an hour or so earlier and then hang out until the fireworks begin. [Highland Park] Volunteers needed for House Tour

Currently, the House Tour Committee is meeting with our selected homeowners and everything is coming together nicely. We have a variety of traditional architectural interiors, as well as some more modern interior renovations, which will be on display for this year’s tour. We are in need of volunteers for the event. There will be two 3-hour shifts; the morning shift is from 10:45 AM to 2:00 PM and the afternoon shift lasts from 1:45 PM to 5:00 PM. Please note that each shift is one hour shorter than last year. Each volunteer and homeowner will receive a complimentary ticket to enjoy the tour. We are looking for volunteers to be placed in each of the homes and at the ticket booth at St. Andrews, which is the starting point of the tour. Also, if there are any interested parents of Dilworth and Fulton students who would like to set up a fundraising table, please contact us at the information below. Local Highland Park businesses that plan to hold special events or sales on the day of the tour should contact the committee about displaying information at the ticket booth. Lastly, if you are interested in helping with the planning for the tour over the summer, please get in touch. The committee could use members to help with marketing, advertising, graphic design and printing. Dear Highland Park Neighbors, The recent round of posts about whether children and pets should be allowed in the reflecting pool at Highland Park illustrates how some people discuss calmly, while others prefer bullying to get their way. I will not be bullied on this mailing list by anyone. Maybe in the end most people will be fine with the consequences of letting kids and pets swim in the pool. On the other hand, maybe we'll end up saying you really should not even float boats. I, for one, would like to stick to the substance of the argument. The name- calling is getting in the way. SO: from the point of view of me, who says people should not swim or bathe in the reflecting pool, the arguments boil down to a few basic ones: 1. It's a reflecting pool. The swimming pool is down the road. 2. The risk of drowning is non-trivial and non-intuitive, especially with no lifeguards. Assume the water is chlorinated to reduce infections (not saying it is). Assume all parents are fine with resuscitating their kids, or someone else's. The odds of injury or drowning simply do not favor people who run and play in or around the water. According to the Mayo Clinic, most drownings occur very quickly, with parents nearby. According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, most children who actually drown were only playing or walking near the water. Then there are all the injuries sustained to children who only almost drowned. I include the excerpts from their websites below. 3. There is some chance that the water is not chlorinated. If it is not, then the urinating that comes with swimming children and pets will cause infections or serious illness. 4. Property damage to the fountain and the pool. Curiously, I recall arguments against installing a reflecting pool some years ago when the plans were being made. You know what people I heard were worried about? Kids drowning. The counter-arguments then? "No one would be so stupid as to let their kid go swimming in it." At the time of such incidents, most victims were being supervised by one or both parents. Nearly 70 percent of the children were not expected to be near the pool when they were found in the water. It takes only a few minutes for a child to drown. More than three- quarters of children who drown at neighborhood pools are out of sight for less than five minutes. What's more, drowning is a silent death. There is no splashing to alert anyone that the child is in trouble. (http://www.cihi.ca/cihiweb/dispPage.jsp?cw_page=media_20jul2005_e) “For every child that drowned in 2002–2003, there were 6 to 10 more who almost drowned and required hospitalization,” says Margaret Keresteci, Manager of Clinical Registries at CIHI. “When you take into account that one in four children in Ontario who experience near- drowning sustain permanent brain damage, you start to get an idea of how vital it is to make water safety a priority.” The most commonly recorded injuries in near-drowning incidents were hypoxia (lack of oxygen) and internal (lung) injuries (83%). Almost half (48%) of all near-drowning injuries in Ontario occurred among toddlers. Most drowning incidents do not actually involve people swimming. In fact, 76% of children involved in a drowning incident were playing or walking near water when drowning or near-drowning occurred."

[Highland Park] Fountain and Reflecting Pool

As one of the administrators of the list, I have been getting the messages about the fountain, and have only put some of them thru. Many of them have the same (or similar comments) so I did not send all of them out. In reference to Eliza, who first brought this issue up, and her last posting which referred to negative comments. I have seen several comments that went to both her and the email list (which I did not put thru) that were ignorant and/or insulting. I assume she may have received others that did not get copied to the list. I did not put these thru since I felt they were not appropriate for the list. So even though the list may not have seen them, Eliza did get some nasty emails, and I understand her frustration with this. I received comments from both Mike Gable, Deputy Director of Public Works for the City, and Phil Gruszka, Director of Parks Management and Maintenance Policies for the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, concerning the fountain and reflecting pool. Both of them stated that the fountain and reflecting pool are for aesthetic purposes and were not intended to be used as a pool for humans or animals. To sum up the emails: The reflecting pool is not supposed to be used for cooling off, bathing or swimming. But it is hard to resist the temptation to use it for that. The police have more important things to do than watch the fountain, but if destructive activities are occurring, we should call 911. Even shallow water is dangerous and can cause drowning, but if there is supervision then no one should get hurt. If you are concerned about this issue, you should call 311 and give your comments.
