Hello all, I grew up in Highland Park, attended the Farmhouse summer camps, Zoo Camp, graduated from the Ellis School and then attended Emerson College in Boston, where I recently cieved a BFA in Creative Writing. I'm excited to announce that this fall, I'll be teaching a course at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts entitled "Exploring Poetry" designed specifically for 13-16 year olds. The course runs from September 19th to November 7th, and will meet each Wednesday from 6 to 8 P.M. This course will provide a nurturing environment in which students may engage with language, unfettered by the perhaps daunting or self-censoring influence of older, more experienced poets (i.e. no individual "who is, like, as old as my mom" will be in class, so students may feel a bit more comfortable bringing more sensitive topics to their poetry). Students will have the opportunity to discover the possibilities of language through in-class and take-home exercises. We will read poetry by both canonized and contemporary poets, which will lead to a number of exercises exploring the basics mechanics of poetry. Other exercises will include (but are not limited to) experimentation with a variety of forms (from the traditional haiku and sonnet to Found Poetry and erasure), as well as engagement with personal influences in visual arts and music. It is my hope that through my class, individuals might latch onto both inner and exterior inspiration, and complete the class with a new-found energy, a notebook full of new poems and questions, and a deeper appreciation of what poetry is, and can be. [Highland Park] ROJ on Sundays

Hello All I just had to write something about the Reservoir of Jazz concerts that take place here in August (and the first week in September). Unfortunately, 2 have been rained out, but the other 2 were great. I am not a big jazz fan, but I do enjoy the music from time to time. I did not attend many of the concerts until I started volunteering to hand out info and talk about the HPCC at these events. It continues to amaze me to see these crowds sitting in the Park enjoying music and their neighbors. This past weekend there had to be 500-1000 folks there. There is a variety of folks there, all ages and all races, just hanging out enjoying themselves. People bring blankets, chairs, tables, food and drink. It is like one large picnic. I would recommend that you come and check the last one (for this year) out this Sunday from 5-7 pm. Actually, plan on arriving around 4 to get a good seat and get settled in. Bring your friends and family and enjoy a lovely afternoon in Highland Park. Although I volunteer, and help set up, there are many folks who are responsible for running the event. Thanks to Ethan Winograd (from the HPCC); Amanda Morel, Brandon, Jim and Alex (from CitiParks); and Jerry at O'Neill Sound for arranging and setting up the event each week. Rachel Matos, who arranges for art/craft activities for the kids. And the great musicians who come and put on a great show. This week's performer is Spirit on the Hill, who I know nothing about. But I will be there, enjoying myself, talking to neighbors, and providing information, so stop over to the Highland Park Community Council booth and say hello. See you on Sunday. Bob

I am currently a graduate student in the School of Social Work, at the University of Pittsburgh doing an internship with CYS. Last year I did an internship at an adoption agency. Now, I have free time on the week-ends and would like to do some babysitting/childcare during the afternoon or evenings. I am a mature 23 years old female who has had a great deal of prior experience in a number of childcare settings including working at a daycare center for four years, as a summer camp counselor, and have babysat frequently for children from newborn and up. These, plus my current graduate school internship work makes me uniquely qualified..and, of course, I really enjoy children! You will find that I am reliable, trustworthy, mature, energetic, and cheerful with my own transportation.
