Meet the Composers Alastair Stout and Ellen Spondike At St. Andrew's, Highland Park Thursday, March 6, 8 p.m. The "First Thursday of the Month" Choral Evensong, followed by Musical Recital, will include an Evening Service, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, by Alastair Stout, Organist and Director of Music at the Coraopolis United Methodist Church. See his full biography below. The service will be followed by a musical recital, Ellen Spondike, flute, and Barbara Lewis, piano, including an original composition, "Four Seasons for Flute and Piano," by Mrs. Spondike. Ellen Spondike is Director of Children's Music at St. Andrew's, with a Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Duquesne and a Masters Degree in Flute Performance from CMU. Barbara Lewis, Assistant Organist at St. Andrew's, received a BA in Music from St. Lawrence University. Born in 1975, Alastair Stout grew up in the Shetland Isles off the north east coast of Scotland. He studied at the Royal College of Music with Joseph Horovitz and Dr. John Birch (1993 - 1997), the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Robert Saxton (1997 - 98) and Royal Holloway, University of London with Simon Holt (1998 - 2001) where he graduated with a PhD in composition. Whilst in London he was assistant organist at Wesleys Chapel, the Mother Church of World Methodism, and gave recitals at St. Pauls Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Ely Cathedral, the Temple and St Brides Church, Fleet Street, as well as throughout the UK. Since moving to America in 2002 to take up the position of Music Director at the Coraopolis United Methodist Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he has given recitals through out Pennsylvania, Ohio and Iowa as well as presented workshops on new repertoire and composition. He has performed in collaborated with various artists including choreographers, painters, sculptors and photographers. He is also active as a producer being recently involved in recording two CDs from St Pauls Church in Akron, Ohio, and one from Waltham Abbey in Essex, UK. As a composer he has written for almost every genre including an 80 minute chamber opera with a libretto by Jonathan Lennie based on the final flight of the Russian Astronaut, Vladimir Komarov. Over the past two years he has completed commissions for the New London Childrens Choir, the Rothko String Trio, the University of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and violinist Roger Zahab who performed his solo violin work A Reel Sweet Kiss in New York City last May. His most recent works: Cave Paintings for two pianos, written for the London-based pianists Karl Lutchmeyer and David Alexander and a song-cycle: City of Passions and poetry - setting poems by the Iranian poet Foroogh Farrokhzaad - written for the soprano Amy Stabnau, were performed to much acclaim. In 2005 he won the William Mathias Composition Composition Award and was a featured composer in the Kings Lynn Festival (UK) in July.

Stations of the Cross Artistic Interpretations and Meditations March 17-21 6000 Highland Ave. (The old PNC bank building on the corner of Highland and Penn across from East Liberty Presbyterian) Every year the Open Door (a church that makes its home in the Union Project 801 N. Negley Ave.) seeks to provide an opportunity for budding, emerging and established artists to create artistic interpretations and meditations on the traditional 14 Stations of the Cross. This year we have 18 artists exhibiting. In so doing we also hope to encourage and enrich our neighborhood and its residents through the vision of these visual artists. At around 8 pm this evening my husband and I heard 2 gunshots coming from the direction of our alley (Velie Way) behind our house. We saw no cars in the alley nor heard any speeding away after the sounds. We immediately phoned 911 and reported it. *Four Unique Ceramics Exhibits Open at Union Project in March 2008 * Featuring functional and sculptural ceramic works by locally and nationally acclaimed ceramic artists, four original shows open at the Union Project during the month of March in conjunction with the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) 2008 conference, taking place March 19th – 22nd at the Convention Center in Pittsburgh. Located at 801 N. Negley Ave. at the corner of Stanton Avenue in Pittsburgh's east end, the Union Project, a nonprofit community and arts organization, is housed in a restored historic church, providing a creative and edgy space for these ceramic exhibits. A complimentary reception featuring local musical artists Boca Chica and Lohio, will take place at the Union Project on March 21 from 6:00pm-9:00pm. The following site-specific exhibits can be seen at the Union Project daily from 9 -5 and Wednesday through Saturday 7:00am-9:00pm throughout March 2008. *Tableware from the Neighborhood* features functional ceramics by the Union Project's Ceramics@UP staff members Justin Rothshank, Saeeda Brown and Lindsay Ford. This lecture will focus on the research done by the Union Project and students from Carnegie Mellon University in 2005, which let to the creation of the ceramics cooperative studio at the Union Project. I managed to save 3 of those four pieces and they could probably be glued back on, but after straightening out the top piece, I would probably put that side against a wall to hide it. Also, one of the legs got lost during the move and the bottom trim/legs got scraped up, so the trim and remaining legs could be removed so that the armoire rests on the frame for the drawers or a brick or something equivalent could be used as the missing leg. All the furniture is located in Avalon 15202 and can be picked up almost anytime, though hopefully within the next week since there is not enough room right now in our house for all of it. Most of the furniture would require a truck or van to move it and at least 2 strong people. Thanks.
