Consider these facts from the Uniform Crime Report: >From 2005 to 2006, robberies with a gun increased by 77 percent in Erie, 57 percent in Allentown, 36 percent in Williamsport, 28 percent in Reading, and 12 percent in Allegheny County. Homicides by firearms in Pennsylvania surged 36 percent from 2000 to 2006. Twenty-seven counties saw an increase in homicides. These statistics demonstrate handgun violence is not just a big-city problem - it's a statewide problem. In December, a growing coalition of law enforcement officials, Pennsylvania mayors, legislators, gun violence victims and Gov. Rendell joined CeaseFirePA in the Capitol to urge the legislature to pass common-sense handgun regulations. "Violence caused by illegal handguns is a growing problem across our Commonwealth," said Reading Mayor Tom McMahon, who heads a statewide task force of mayors on this issue. "It's not just a Pittsburgh or Philadelphia problem. We need stronger handgun laws and a lost-or-stolen reporting requirement is an important reform." Recently another group of citizens, law enforcement officials, mothers of gun violence victims, doctors, and local elected officials met in Pittsburgh to urge the General Assembly to take action to address this growing public health problem. Pittsburgh Police Chief Nathan Harper urged the legislature to approve mandatory reporting of lost or stolen handguns to help police crack down on straw purchasers. The Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association supports this reform. So does the Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. You can join this growing coalition of Pennsylvanians and urge your Representative to support this common-sense handgun safety reform to help make our Commonwealth safer for the public and our police. Hi Neighbors... I promised my dear husband that I would get us tickets to hear Anthony Bourdain's lecture on 3/31. Admittedly, I procrastinated, and evidently the tickets sold out on 2/22 - the same day that I mailed in my order. Needless to say, I'm going to hear about this ad nauseum unless I can find two tickets (not to mention that I feel very badly that I totally blew this one... ) Does anyone have two tickets that they would be willing to sell me for a tidy profit?
