I think it is appropriate to call 911 when there are groups of roving kids on or near your property and/or making threats.We came from a city neighborhood that would do just that and even went as far as hiring an off duty police officer to add more security to our neighborhood. After less than 3 years, property values nearly doubled and an old neighborhood had been gentrified. Many have heard about the "broken window" theory. If your neighbors window is broken then that begets more broken windows until the whole neighborhood is in shambles. But this also works in reverse. Add curb appeal to a worn down house and maintain that look then all the other houses slowly but surely will improve. That, along with more police presence will make a neighborhood really sought after. As far as our cars go, we all should know not to leave a single thing in them. Change, CD's, umbrellas, purses, laptops are all hot items and let's face it, we live in a big city so no matter, what some cars are perfect targets.

One of the most frustrating aspects of living in Highland Park is the continued and exponentially increasing number of thefts from cars, garages, porches, front yards, backyards... These crimes increase in the summer. It is a shame that our flowers, plants, porch furniture, bikes, and objects in cars (CDs, change...) are not safe on our own property. I have politely questioned groups of roving kids who are on my property or my neighbors property only to be sworn at and verbally threatened. If the parents of these kids are residents of Highland Park they must be held accountable. If these kids are occupying rentals in our neighborhood can the owners of the property be held accountable and tenants evicted under some nuisance or undesirable tenant law? [Highland Park] another foster cat looking for a home!

Hello neighbors, I am sending another email about a cat looking for a home. He's a handsome black 2-3 yr old boy, who was taken to Animal Friends as a stray who was not very trusting of humans. He may have had some bad experiences. In any event, he and I worked very hard to build some trust, and he has come a long way. He did try the cat room at Animal Friends, but found a shelter environment way too stressful, so he's back with me. Once he gets to know you, he's a wonderful, friendly cat who loves attention and purrs a lot. He also LOVES other cats. He would need a relatively quiet home, preferably with feline siblings, with a human family who will be patient as he comes out of his shell in a new environment. Please note that this is an Animal Friends foster and the adoption would have to go through them. Please let me know if you are interested in giving this sweet boy a forever home. Meg

We've come to the sad conclusion that we need a rooftop antenna. We get one station-11. We can't find anyone on Angie's list or others. Anyone know a roottop[ antenna installer-NOT cable-comcast, direct tv, etc. Thanks- Liz O.

[Highland Park] minor garden vandalism

Hi neighbors, I'm pretty sure that people have written about this sort of thing before but for the first time we're having a problem with front garden vandalism. Specifically, this summer/spring we've had two plants removed (roots and all) and now two bushes de-leafed and flowers from several other plants ripped off as soon as they bloom. I don't think we have any vindictive enemies, so I'm guessing kids? Anyways, I'm not much of a gardener to start with and this is taking a serious toll on our sparse garden. Any thoughts about how to deal with this? I've hesitated to report it to the police because it seems so minor... should I? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! -Sara
