East End Neighbors, This Saturday, October 16th, the Morningside Area Community Council will be hosting it's 2nd annual "Fall-O-ween" Festival from 2:00 - 5:00pm at Chislett & Greenwood Streets (Morningside business district) following the neighborhood Clean Up event. Please see the attached poster for details. Everyone is invited to stop by with their families to enjoy a beautiful autumn afternoon in the 'Burgh! Item number one is a vintage singer sewing machine. we can't find a date on it but it is electric so we are thinking it's from the 50s or 60s. it has a small drawer on the opposite side that has it's accessories. we are asking $70 or BO item number two is an Ethan Allen desk. (Tuesday, October 12, 8:00pm) Hello Neighbors, I'm starting to think about renovating my kitchen to the extent of dealing with load bearing walls, bumping out an exterior wall, adding a half bath and laundry room. (Why not dream big!) While I have ideas, I would really appreciate recommendations for architects and general contractors. Also, I'd love to hear the lessons you learned along the way of your renovation and things you wish you would have done. thanks!

The members of The Three Rivers Underground Brewer’s (TRUB) and IO Networks (glass sponsor) will be providing their Fourth Annual “Brewing Up A Cure” for Cystic Fibrosis on Saturday, October 16th at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association (PAA) on Fifth Avenue in Oakland from 7 to 10PM. Tickets are now available online at www.brewingupacure.org General admission is $30. The VIP Session has officially SOLD OUT!! Regular admission tickets are available still, but they are going fast as we anticipate selling out before the event. Get them online today!www.brewingupacure.org Entertainment by Highway 13 will return by popular demand from last year’s event. The home brewers have been brewing up more than 50 different home beers created by members of TRUB for sampling and there will be delicious food from a variety of restaurants. There will also be commercial beers such as East End Brewing, Dogfishhead, and a unique selection from Frank B. Fuhrer Sales. Again this year there will be a “special” super silent auction of a hand crafted bar donated by T.C. Contracting and other awesome baskets and silent auction items for guests to bid on. (Lots of Penguins Hockey ticket packages!) Brewing Up A Cure has been extremely well received and successful these past two years. Linden K-5 will have an open house on Wednesday, October 20th from 4:15pm to 6:15pm. Liberty K-5 will have an open house on Thursday, October 21st from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Montessori K-8 will have an open house on Thursday, October 21st from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. Obama IB 6-12 will have an open house on Wednesday, October 20th from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. PPS Magnet Programs Update The due date for Pittsburgh Public Schools magnet programs is December 10th, 2010. Parents can be confused trying to understand the maze of private, charter and public schools in Pittsburgh. The Highland Park Community Council will be holding a Pittsburgh Public School magnet information session on Thursday 10/21/2010 at 7:30pm at St Andrews Church (5801 Hampton St). This will follow the regular HPCC meeting at 7:00pm. A representative from the Pittsburgh Public Schools will attend to discuss options available to families in the Pittsburgh Public Schools for the 2011-12 school year and how to apply. There are many new developments at the Pittsburgh Public Schools including: · In 2006, only 29% of 5th graders at Fulton (our neighborhood school) were proficient in math. In 2009, 89% are proficient. It’s the highest rate in the city at a public K-5. · A new Mandarin Chinese magnet will open at Linden K-5 in the fall of 2011 for incoming kindergarten students. · Obama International Baccalaureate 6-12 magnet will move to the Peabody Facility in the 2011-2012 school year. Students can pursue a full IB diploma in grades 11 and 12. · The new Sci-Tech 6-12 magnet in Oakland is enrolling students. Also, the Environmental Charter School at Frick Park, which opened its doors in 2008 will be enrolling grade 5 this year. Written materials will be available about the Environmental School.
