I also received emails asking for me to pass along my list so here it is. Below you'll find the recommendations for architects, contractors, designers, and some darn good advice. Good luck and happy hammering! Vasilios Sofillas 516-695-7082 (V.H.I. INC) Designer and Contractor , email is _vshi1(a)aol.com_ (mailto:vshi1@aol.com) he has done incredible kitchens and bathrooms. He does high end work in Manhattan and is transitioning a move to Pgh. He is trustworthy, does only high quality work,respectful,and quickly finishes projects. (2 nieghbours recommended him) Ray Schinhofen, 412-441-0112 He did our kitchen upgrade beautifully. He specializes in old house renovations. (2 neighbours recommended him) Brian Viehland of DesignontheSquare.com He is affiliated with Lami-Grubb on Swissvale Ave./Edgewood Ave. in Edgewood. This firm has other fine architects as well. He designed my kitchen... it involved taking out all the cabinets, removing a wall, major improvement. The CONTRACTOR on this project was: Vincent Ventura - (412) 787-8538 Ventura Contracting Company Chad Carter - 412-983-8057 .is the best -- designed and built our basement and our backyard -- he's an architect and builder with tremendous vision and excellent skills. Sarah Stillman - 484-883-1088. We just finished our complete kitchen remodel and converted a mudroom to a full bathroom. At first we had an architect come over but in the end we went with an interior designer. She was able to deal with the weight bearing walls, etc and went above and beyond that with a great design and finished product. She saved us more than 3 times her expense by doing all the shopping around for cabinets, flooring etc. Since she is trying to get her independent work off the ground, she is very reasonably priced. The CONTRACTOR on this project was: Bill Ott - 724-331-5165 Beechwood Construction We were also very happy with our contractor (whom she found). Our neighbors started their kitchen one month before us and it still isn't finished and ours has been done for a month (and we couldn't be happier with it). John Seles 412-571-2001 - CONTRACTOR - John has remodeled my kitchen and completed much work at my house. Experienced in re-modeling. Sandy Streiff and Paul Ferraro 412-441-1944, cell 412-841-4924 - CONTRACTORS. We have only needed minimal stuff for now but they are the ones we will be getting when we get our renovations going. They have an amazing portfolio of particularly creative renovations. I have seen pictures of some of their work and have been extremely impressed with their strengths from conceptual approach, to materials used, timely execution, attention to detail. The architectural history is represented throughout its streets, parks and the several family activities, but the best is the people. I am an Architectural Design with more than 20 year experience in Colombia my native country in Tennessee and Georgia. Currently I work from home making plans in Auto CAD or Revit. Develop architectural surveys of existing spaces and the new construction. I very creative, I can design new homes or make a great and functional renovation. Also, I have experience designing restaurants, shops and interior spaces. I am a member of AIA and AIBD. Advice: I do work in an architectural firm, but I'm not writing you this to promote my firm.... What I want to say is that we've seen many clients who are penny wise, pound foolish. Sometimes a bigger upfront cost devoted to a proper structural, electrical and insulation work will save you frustration and possibly a re-do few years later. And you'd want to be code compliant should you ever want to sell your house. Some contractors who are not well versed in the codes would tell you things you can cut out to save money, a good architect can prevent that. And it's always more helpful to get it done in one shot (as in, not to stop half way and restart the design process a few months later). It usually ends up costing more for the clients because the architects has to dig out the drawings and re-remember it again, taking more hours than necessary. The key to have a good working relationship is to have an open communication.
