Thank you all who responded. A few of you asked for me to post the replies to the times and activities going on for Halloween. This is what I received: *Trick or treating happens officially from 5:30pm to 7:30pm per the City of Pgh. I confirmed this via the city's website. *A few folks thought that trick or treating was from 6-8. I'm sure if your lights were still on, beggars would come in search of candy. *Streets suggested as good places to begin your trick or treating included Beverly, Bryant, Cordova and King *St. Andrews church supposedly has some kind of trick or treating "after party". No further details provided. *Highland Park CC sponsors a Halloween Costume Parade and Pizza Party at the HP Fountain starting at 3:30 and running til 5:00. One response mentioned bikes and a bike decorating contest. [Highland Park] election day volunteers needed at our hospitals

We are looking for volunteers to provide Election Protection to our hospitals in Allegheny County on Election Day. Every Election Day hundreds of our friends and neighbors who expected to be voting at the polls – have an unexpected illness, accident or other medical emergency. Without our help, they may not have an opportunity to vote. The Disability Voting Coalition of PA, in cooperation with the Election Protection Program, has taken on the challenge of providing volunteers at the 7 UPMC hospitals in Allegheny County: * Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC * UPMC McKeesport * UPMC Mercy * UPMC Passavant * UPMC Presbyterian / Montefiore * UPMC Shadyside * UPMC St. Margaret We’re looking for volunteers who could – · Volunteer for part or all of Election Day from 8:30am to 8:00pm; · Provide notary services (we’re certain we need a notary for Shadyside Hospital; · Serve as a driver for our volunteer going to and from the Elections Department downtown (departing from each hospital around 4:00pm and 6:00pm. [Highland Park] wonderful farm in Meadville

Hi neighbors! I want to share some information about an outstanding farm that I recently visited in Meadville, the Bookamer Family Farm<http://www.bookamerfamilyfarm.com/>. I hope it will especially be of interest to educators and larger groups. This summer, I set out to find a farm that organically and sustainably grows cows, pigs and chickens. After a good bit of research, I found this farm and went for a visit. The Bookamers have something really special going on. The farm has been in the family for generations, and only in September 2009 did it become a business. The six Bookamer kids pushed for it, and the parents listened. With regard to food, basically what they do is sell only what they can't eat, so there is limited stock of everything and you need to call ahead. The Bookamers abide by the old farmer's rule that they'll only charge what they need so that their family can eat for free. So when my husband and I loaded up our freezer with 60 pounds of organic grass-fed hamburger, three top cuts of steak, three kinds of pork sausage, pork chops, and roasters, we paid $4/lb. for all of it, because that's how much it costs them to produce the meat and still eat for free. In stewardship to the land and the neighbor, they don't charge more simply because they can. The meat will last us over a year, and we won't likely buy meat from any other source in the meantime. I should say, though, that we lucked out and bought the rest of *their* meat for the year - they won't up their production of food simply because there's a demand. True to their native American heritage, they are using their land to maximum efficiency, and won't try to milk more out of it just because more customers are knocking on their doors. So this isn't much of a plug for their meat products - they don't have much left at the present moment - that's just part of the back story. What the Bookamers are really selling is education. They bring in classes of students or other groups and teach them about the balance of their farm animals, pond, forest, and gardens. Visitors are guided by Archangel, a gorgeous white farm dog...if I knew anything about dogs, I would tell you what kind he is. Anyway, the eldest daughter runs their raw milk dairy. You have to bring your own glass bottle because of state laws, but when there's fresh milk (which is usually), you can fill up for only $2.50/gallon of grass-fed, organic raw milk. Mrs. Bookamer offers small-group cheese-making classes; I learned how to make a fabulous mozzarella when I was there, and have made it twice since. The second eldest daughter takes care of the alpacas, shears their coats, spins it, and sells the fiber; she also offers fiber-spinning lessons. The third eldest daughter runs the quaint bed-and-breakfast that is located on the property; guests can learn to milk cows or bale hay, or just sit back. Guests order whatever they want to eat that is produced on the farm, and Mom will make it. The fourth child, a boy, ensures the rotational grazing of the cows and chickens, and manages plants grown in their woodlands. The youngest two boys are 'Lawn Maintenance' until they get old enough for their own jobs. If you have a church, school, or work group looking for a nearby field trip locale, I would definitely recommend taking a trip to their farm and signing on for an educational tour. Or, if this all appeals to your own philosophies of living and eating, go for a visit or take one of their classes with family and friends. They're wonderful! Best, Leah Helou
