[Highland Park] friendly microscopic critters in the pond

Dear neighbors, Ever wonder what kind of microscopic creatures live in Lake Carnegie, the pond by the swimming pool in Highland Park? Come see your tiny neighbors in video, still photographs, and large oil paintings this Saturday, October 15 from 7 - 10 pm at the Brew House Gallery 101 on the South Side. I've been taking pictures of the microscopic animals that live in the pond, along with those in other ponds and rivers around town, with a simple microscope made from a cheap webcam. I'd love to have my human-sized neighbors join me and my friend, painter Daniel Maidman, at the opening reception for small neighbors / Microbiota<http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=126204544147036>. The Brew House is a gallery and artists' studio space located at 21st and Mary, just off Carson Street. Small neighbors/Microbiota will remain at the gallery until November 5. I will also be offering a free hands-on workshop for all ages on Saturday, October 22 from 2-4 pm. I'll show you how I made the microscope, and tell you more about the tiny plants and animals that live in the water around us. [Highland Park] Missing Cat

Hi Highland Parkers! A very friendly orange and white cat showed up at my house today. It seems to be well-fed, and is wearing a flea collar and another orange collar. The tag states "Peer Gynt Outdoor Cat" and the phone number 412-719-2735. I called the number and got a woman who lives in Wilkes-Barre. It loves to be rubbed and even climbed up into my lap. It wouldn't stay still long enough for me to get a photo. I just want to make sure that this cat does indeed belong to someone in the neighborhood and hasn't been abandoned. It keeps trying to sneak into my house when I open the front door. Please let me know if this lovely guy or gal belongs to you. I gave it some food and a bowl of water. I'm going to keep an eye out to see if it hangs around or finds its way home. If I can't locate the owner, I'll be taking it to the ARL to see if it's microchipped. A dentist who will do root canals is practicing outside of their scope. An endodontist is specialized in root canals. If you need a complicated extraction, you may need an oral surgeon. The dentist can then do the restorative work (crown, implant, etc.). I can recommend my endodontist - Rick Smith at Associated Dental Specialists. I go to the Oakland office, which is a little low-rent, but they have taken good care of me - 3 root canals this year!!! Yikes! http://www.ads-endo.com/ I can NOT recommend my dentist. Julie Chetlin on Craig Street. She bought the practice last year from my long-time dentist. I have given it a year and we are not a good fit. I find her to be snotty with her staff as well as me. Her answer to everything I ask is "Well it's up to you. I don't really know." Like I said, she is snotty. So, I am in the market for a new dentist. As the Outreach Manager for the Homeless Children's Education Fund (HCEF) I am so pleased that Councilman, Patrick Dowd and the Pittsburgh City Council will be proclaiming Oct 15 - 23 as Homeless Children's Awareness Week. Last school year 1,700 school-aged children and youth were identified as experiencing homelessness in Allegheny County. HCEF has partnered with 17 agencies that serve families experiencing homelessness. Our mission is to provided educational materials and opportunities for children in these shelters www.homelessfund.org so that they can keep up in school with their peers.
