Dear Neighbors: Thank you for writing! I hope the suggestions will continue to come in, but here is what I have learned from you so far: Get a kayak/canoe and paddle down from Washington's Landing. Anyone going to Washington's Landing should be aware that the 31st Street Bridge is closed. The only way to get there is from the Heinz plant (condos) next to the 16th St Bridge Check Lawrenceville in Arsenal Park near 40th street. They have them either on the 3rd or 4th. We always head down towards Heinz Field and walk out to the river. You can usually find parking back by CCAC and getting out after the show is usually fairly easy if you live north. You only need to go early if you want to sit for the show. If you are going to canoe from Washington's Landing and are coming from Highland Park, you may want to cross on the 40th St Bridge instead of going all the way downtown, crossing and heading north again. You cannot get to Washington's Landing from 40th St. The 31st Street Bridge is completely closed. The only way a car can get to Herr's Island is on River Road, which you access near the 16th Street Bridge. Don't go to the Point. Drive downtown, park on the street (it's free obviously, at night) near Heinz Hall or the Benedum, walk to the bridge and watch from there. You'll be back at your car and gone before all the 'burbanites even know it's over. It's a spectacular vantage point, too. Park at Millvale Riverfront Park. Cycle or paddle down to the big city. drive to S.Side and bike down to Station Sq. right under the display. The golf course at the top of Forbes in Sq Hill. It's above CMU. Bring bug stuff. Come on, neighbors! This is cool! 55 inch Bazoongi Bouncer. This is a great trampoline, especially for burning off that extra kid energy in winter. It is enclosed for safety. It can be used indoors and has always been used indoors, lightly, so it's in good shape. We are selling because no longer have the room. A huge bonus is its already assembled (the enclosure was taken off just so it can fit through the door. It is recommended for under 110 lbs. We put sandbags on the bottom just to make sure it doesn't shift around. $60.

Want to play guitar? I can help you. I have been teaching guitar for 10 years and playing professionally for even longer. My curriculum can be tailored to your individual needs and desires; in other words, I can teach you to play the kind of music YOU want to play. We will learn to play YOUR favorite songs, talk about the technique, tone, and playing style of YOUR favorite guitarists, and explore the chord theory, scales, and time signatures that make those awesome sounds possible. We can cover basic reading skills if you wish, and ALL students will be trained to learn songs by ear and easily jam with others. Playing guitar should be FUN, and if you put the necessary time and energy into it, you will be rewarded with the ability to hear the sounds you love come from your very own fingers! It doesn't matter whether you want to play acoustic or electric; rock, jazz, blues, country, punk, metal or folk; fingerstyle or flatpicking; all you need is a guitar and the desire to learn, and we can explore the infinite possibilities of music. [Highland Park] Does anybody know what that smell was this morning?

There was a strange, industrial/smokey/smoggy smell wafting through my bedroom window this morning. I've smelled it before, but don't know what it is. I live near Jackson and Sheridan, but on several occasions I've gone jogging through the smell and found that it doesn't start to fade until I get up into the park near the reservoir at the top of the hill. I wanted to clarify the following points to my previous e-mail: - The Zoning Hearing for 226 N Negley Avenue is at 9:50 AM on July 19, 2012 at 200 Ross Street, downtown. Parking is available immediately behind 200 Ross Street. - The Zoning Board of Adjustment does not accept letters as testimony. It is important for you to attend the zoning hearing if you want to present testimony either for or against the proposed use change. - If you choose to send a letter, we will present your letter to the Zoning Board of Adjustment. Though the letter will not have the force of testimony, if you are not able to attend the zoning hearing, it is still important to show the community's opinion on this matter. - I attached a form letter for any who want to send a form letter. [Highland Park] Sunoco Part II

Dear Highland Park List Serv, I wanted to make you aware of a zoning hearing on Negley Avenue. The owners of 226 N Negley Avenue have requested a 'change in use' variance for the former Hollisters Garage at 226 N Negley from its current use as a garage into a convenience store. The current use of the site is RM - M, which stands for Residential, Multi-Unit, Moderate Density, meaning low-rise apartments with ample setbacks for green-space and trees. The proposed use is to 'retail sales and service with 6 parking spots,' which is a convenience store. We're all aware of the problems at the Sunoco convenience store in the 200 block of Negley Avenue. I believe that this property could foster similar problems, serving as a magnet for crime and disorder on Negley Avenue. We've made a great deal of progress quieting down this part of our neighborhood. The construction of the handsome apartments at the corner of Negley and Penn, and ELDI's investments in apartments along the 300 block of Negley, have contributed to a drop in crime and an increase in investment in and around this section of the neighborhood. We've seen investments in new market-rate apartment units, condos, and single family homes spring up close by. 226 N Negley's conversion into a convenience store could represent a significant setback to those efforts, especially if it witnesses similar problems to those that have occurred at the Sunoco across the street. Darren Belajac from East Liberty Development (ELDI) will be representing ELDI at the zoning hearing. - If you are able to attend the zoning hearing, we would appreciate your support. Your presence is by far the most effective means to representing your opinion. - If you are not able to attend, but would want to submit a letter representing your opinion to the Zoning Board of Adjustment, please feel free to send your letters to Darren Belajac, who will present your letters to the Zoning Board on your behalf.
