About the recent burglaries, justice and being a good neighbour

Dear neighbours, As far as I started living in Highland Park I pride myself of the wonderful people that live in it, regardless of political views, religion and backgrounds. I felt that people helped each other without judging. However, after one of our neighbours stated her relief after the perpetrator of the burglaries was put into custody I saw really insensitive comments sent into her mailbox. She mentioned that she felt that the police operation was a success, and then some people felt that they were entitled to tell her how wrong she was to feel that she was able to sleep again at night. First of all, I understand that justice reform is needed, I feel the same way. Why this kid did all that? Did the system fail him? Should the system rehabilitate him, for sure! BUT telling your neighbour how wrong is to feel good about this kid being in custody and who has not been able to properly sleep for months because her home was broken into not once BUT TWICE in a short period of time is really rude and insensitive. You are sending your entitled opinion to a wonderful person, who is a fighter for justice and you did not even care if she wanted to talk to this kid too and know why he was doing it. But, what annoys me, even more, is that if you haven't lived through that... Do you think anyone is in the position to tell how to feel your neighbour who didn't even know for months if the perpetrator of the burglaries was someone with a gun and could come back again for a third or fourth time? These people have gone through a stressful situation and their privacy have been violated not once but twice, and they not only lost "material things" (although I would really want my car back too if it happened to me), but they lost the right to feel safe in your own home. So yes, maybe you want to help justice reform, let's do this, by voting the right representatives, judges and politicians, and maybe why don't you go to the place where this kid is held in custody, talk to him and his lawyers and help. I think everything is valid and wonderful, and we should pay attention to our kids from all backgrounds to see how can we help them. But again, if you feel you want to be empathetic to this kid, also try to be empathetic to your neighbours who have gone through very stressful months and they are allowed to feel whatever they feel today. Another Break-In!

Before we get complacent, a house on Winterton Street was broken into this morning (Friday). In broad daylight. Luckily, no one was home at the time. The burglar smashed a glass door to gain entry and riffled through the house. So, a criminal is still out there, and we need to remain vigilant and get the word out! I think it would help immensely if Zone 5/HPCC shared the weekly crime stats on the listserv, as they used to, so that everyone stays informed. Many neighbors I've spoken with were unaware of the recent spate of burglaries. Thank you and stay safe! Amy Burke

Nanny Recommendations

Seeking Auction Donations

Neighbors, On behalf of the students and families of Dilworth Traditional Academy, I am writing to ask if you would be willing to support our school with a donation to the school’s silent auction which will run from April 25 through May 2, kicking off with a live event at the Union Project, to raise funds for the coming year. The money raised through this auction will directly support our children’s educational experience at the school through programs to promote extracurricular activity, support students in need, and fund the ad-hoc needs of teachers throughout the year. We are now looking for donations of artwork, handcrafted items, or art related services. Auction items may include artwork, jewelry, handmade furniture or décor, lessons, gift certificates, event tickets, gift baskets, etc. All donations are tax deductible and as a donor, you will receive publicity prior to and during the event (if desired), which will be viewed by both attendees and online bidders. Personally, there are a few fun crochet patterns I’ve been contemplating that I’m going to make happen, in addition to some balloon art for a birthday party! Burglar is in custody!

Dear Neighbors, Thank you for your supportive messages in light of our recent burglary. The burglar is in custody at the Juvenile Detention Center. He’s 16 years old and was student at Carrick High School. He worked alone. The Police Auto Theft Squad did a fantastic job. This kid is responsible for around 15 car thefts in Highland Park, Point Breeze, and Squirrel Hill. I was assured that he’s looking at at least 4 years of incarceration. Zone 5 Police Follow-up to HPCC Meeting

First up, I want to thank so many people for coming out to last night's community meeting. It was great to have you and I hope we'll see you at future meetings! For those unable to attend, two officers from Zone 5 provided an update on the neighborhood crime statistics since the last meeting in November and spent nearly an hour answering questions about crime and security in the neighborhood. Despite the buzz on social media, there has not been an increase in crime *reported to the police*: in two months, there were 4 car thefts (three of which the keys had been left in the vehicles and one was loaned to someone who did not return it), 6 burglaries (I think! Of those, one was a bike from a detached garage, one was someone getting the house keys out of an unlocked car to access a house, and one did not actually appear to be a burglary but was called in as such), and no robberies (i.e., "muggings") and no overdoses. While any crime is unwelcome and upsetting, we are still one of the safest neighborhoods. The officers reminded residents that some of the best steps we can take to protect ourselves are to keep our homes, garages, and vehicles locked; to install motion sensitive lights; and to report suspicious behavior and actual crime. To see more patrols in the neighborhood, Zone 5 would need to see an uptick in calls - for suspicious behavior and crime, but also calls from residents who are concerned generally. To that end, one of the officers in attendance called me first thing this morning to let me know that in response to the feedback they heard at last night's meeting, they will be increasing patrols in the neighborhood for the next couple of weeks and referred concerns about drugs and prostitution to Narcotics and Vice. We have a great group of officers in Zone 5. Our police officers work hard and would put their lives on the line for us. Everyone at last night's meeting was very respectful and I hope that people continue to show our officers respect and appreciation for all that they do: they too are part of our community.
