Over the past two weeks, a number of officers and detectives from across the City assisted us in conducting a violent crime suppression detail in Zone 5. This detail was in response to the recent uptick in shootings and robberies in the Zone. The team was able to make a number of arrests for firearms violations, as well as apprehend a number of wanted suspects who had warrants out for their arrest. In addition to our investigation, our Federal partners just wrapped-up a large drug investigation that spanned from Pittsburgh to Detroit to the Virgin Islands. Of the many indicted, three are from Zone 5: Raheem Buchanan, 32, Kelvin Ferguson, 29, and Regina Brown, 28, all of Garfield. Jason Jason Lando, Commander Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Zone 5 Station 1401 Washington Blvd Pittsburgh, PA 15206 (412) 665-3605 "Leaders don't create followers... they create more leaders." - T. Peters Stanton Heights/Morningside/Highland Park/East Liberty/Waterworks Mall 8/29/16 Burglary / Stolen Vehicle - 5800 block Elgin Street. Victims reported that someone broke into their vehicle and stole a purse, credit cards, clothing, and keys to the victim's house. The suspects then stole the victim's vehicle, a 2012 silver Mazda CX-9 (PA plate HTL-2893). The victims then checked their residence and found items missing from the residence as well. (162286) 8/29/16 Attempted Theft from Vehicle - 1600 block Hawthorne Court. Victim reported that she returned to her vehicle to find it had been ransacked. Nothing appeared to be missing. Victim may have left her door unlocked. (162341) 8/29/16 Theft from Vehicle - Mellon Street & Jackson Street. Victim reported that someone entered his vehicle and stole a garage door opener to a family member's house. No signs of forced entry into the vehicle. (162433) 8/29/16 Theft from Vehicle - Farragut Street & Wellesley Street. Victim reported that someone smashed her small rear window and entered her vehicle, stealing the registration and some change. (162471) 8/29/16 Theft from Vehicle - 5500 block McCandless Street. Victim reported that someone entered his unlocked vehicle overnight and stole $5.00 in change. (162410) 8/30/16 Burglary - 700 block Chislett Street. Victim returned from a trip to find items missing from her apartment. There were no signs of forced entry. Victim believes the items were taken either by an individual (whose name she could not recall) that stayed at her apartment a few weeks ago, or by her upstairs neighbor, or by a co-worker who lives nearby and knew she was out of town. (162938) 8/30/16 Stolen Vehicle - 1100 block N. Sheridan Avenue. Victim reported that someone stole his 2008 white Chevrolet Impala LTZ (TX plate 826SZW) from in front of his residence. 8/30/16 Theft from Vehicle - Hampton Street & Heberton Street. Victim returned to his vehicle to find his Ruger .380 caliber pistol had been stolen from the center console. Victim stated he left his window down. (163604) 8/30/16 Attempted Theft from Vehicle - 6600 block Jackson Street. Victim returned to her vehicle to find it had been ransacked. Nothing appeared to be missing. No signs of forced entry. (163504) 9/1/16 Aggravated Assault - 1600 block Jancey Street, 11:56 PM. A 28 year-old male victim reported that he was assaulted by his fiancee's ex-boyfriend who came to their house and tried to stab him. The victim was able to wrestle the knife away and the suspect fled. Zone 6 units responded to the home of Michael Allen Leister, 33, of the West End, and arrested him a short time later. (165069) 9/2/16 Theft from Vehicle - 1000 block Chislett Street. Victim reported that someone keyed his vehicle and stole a GPS from it. No signs of forced entry. (165602) 9/3/16 Robbery - 5700 block Centre Avenue, 11:30 PM. A 25 year-old female victim indicated that she noticed a man standing near her when she was trying to open the front door to her apartment building. The man followed her into the building and got onto the elevator with her. Once inside the elevator, the man displayed a large black knife and demanded all of the victim's money. The victim handed over a small amount of cash and the suspect fled when the elevator doors opened. The suspect is described as a black male, 25-45 years old, 6'3" 180 Lbs, thin build, wearing a long sleeve purple t-shirt. Zone 5 detectives are investigating. (166495) Notable Arrests 8/29/16 at 11:23 PM - 700 block Brushton Avenue (Homewood): Officers and detectives that were taking part in a zone-wide violent crime reduction initiative were looking into community complaints of open-air drug sales in front of Bett's Market. While conducting surveillance, officers witnessed a hand-to-hand drug deal between Timothy "Big Cuz" Alexander Jr, 35, of Homestead, and Ryan I. Smith, 34, of McKeesport. Both were arrested. "Big Cuz" was found to be in possession of a large quantity of crack cocaine at the time of his arrest, along with over $1000.00 cash, and two cell phones. (162854) 8/31/16 at 9:56 PM - 800 block Hale Street (Homewood): Officers and detectives that were taking part in a zone-wide violent crime reduction initiative were conducting surveillance when they spotted a warrant suspect, Andrew Jerome Geist, 26, of Homewood, exit a residence on Hale Street. Geist is wanted for Attempted Homicide. Detectives watched as Geist approached a black Jeep that was parked across the street from the house and sold marijuana to the passenger, Christopher W. Robinson, 32, of Overbrook. Detectives moved in and placed Geist and Robinson under arrest. Detectives then obtained a search warrant for Geist's residence at which point they recovered marijuana, digital scales, cash, and drug paraphernalia. (164921) 9/1/16 at 5:15 PM - Washington Blvd & Allegheny River Blvd (Highland Park): Officer Lippert was on patrol when he noticed a warrant suspect in a vehicle that was traveling on Wiltsie Street near Lincoln Avenue. Officer Lippert followed the vehicle while he confirmed the arrest warrant was valid. Officer Lippert then conducted a traffic stop and placed the passenger, Jason Spinelli, 34, of Penn Hills, under arrest. During a search of Spinelli, officers recovered heroin, crack cocaine, $638.00 cash, and drug paraphernalia. (164895) 9/1/16 at 10:25 PM - Wal Mart (Waterworks Mall): Officers and detectives that were taking part in a zone-wide violent crime reduction initiative received a tip that a fugitive, Dorian L. Montgomery, 38, of the Northside, was in the Wal-Mart at the Waterworks Mall. Detectives immediately proceeded to the Waterworks and saw Montgomery trying to leave the area. Detectives ordered Montgomery to stop, at which point he discarded a bag into some bushes, then surrendered. Montgomery was arrested at which point the bag was also recovered and found to contain heroin, marijuana, and crack cocaine. (165033) 9/1/16 at 11:22 PM - 7300 block Frankstown Avenue (Homewood): Officers and detectives that were taking part in a zone-wide violent crime reduction initiative were conducting surveillance in the area when they saw a Male Juvenile, 16, of East Hills, walking down the street with what appeared to be a firearm protruding from under his shirt. Detectives stopped the juvenile and conducted a pat-down, recovering a loaded revolver and marijuana. The juvenile also lied about his identity. He was arrested and taken to Shuman Center. (165050) 9/3/16 at 10:23 AM - Crestline Street & Nimick Place (East Hills): Officers Gallman and Wright were patrolling the area when they came upon a tan Kia Sorrento driving erratically. Upon checking the license plate, these officers found the car was reported stolen. A traffic stop was conducted at which point the driver, a Male Juvenile, 16, of Rankin, was placed under arrest. (166040) 9/3/16 at 10:55 AM - 6361 Penn Avenue (McDonald's) (East Liberty): Officers responded to a 911 tip that a male was standing in front of the restaurant with a gun in his waistband. Upon their arrival, officers ordered the male, Ronald Bryant, 26, of Garfield, to show his hands. Instead, Bryant reached into his waistband. Officers immediately took Bryant to the ground and handcuffed him. A .38 caliber revolver was then recovered from Bryant's pants. Bryant was also found to have several warrants out for his arrest. Bryant later told officers he only brought the gun to that location because he was going to sell the gun to someone. (166059)
