Hi Neighbors! I have friends moving to the area who will be in need of some items to set up their apartment. They are looking for a queen mattress/box springs, and three twin sets. Also a dining table and chairs, possibly a TV, plant stands etc If you have any of these items to sell at a reasonable price (or for free!) please let me know, and I will compile the list and send it their way, many thanks!!! Last Thursday the HPCC meeting drew a nice crowd. We heard from zone 5 police officers, the Allegheny County Health Department and the PWSA. In addition, we elected new officers and a new board member or two. But something else happened that night that I can't let pass unnoticed. Bob Staresinic stepped down as Secretary of the Highland Park Community Council. Through his involvement in the HPCC Bob has served our neighborhood for more than twenty years including acting as President, Vice President, Board Member and Secretary. He often stepped up to fill a position when volunteers were scarce. Bob has written a number of grants when funds were low so that we could support the Reservoir of Jazz, children's activities, and the Bryant Street Festival. He has served on the welcoming committee, hauled hay and pumpkins at fall festivals, dyed Easter Eggs in the spring and set up and taken down more tents than we can count. He has sold raffle tickets, attended meetings, talked to the business owners to help facilitate neighborhood cohesiveness. More than once he has told me the best part of his work in the community is meeting and talking to the people. Our neighborhood is undoubtedly a better, more friendly, welcoming place because of Bob and his efforts. The good news is he has assured us he is willing to stay involved in an informal way now that he is no longer an officer. So when you see Bob at the Halloween event or walking the streets of the neighborhood, say hello and take a minute to thank him.

Register or Update your Voter Registration for the November elections!

Neighbors- The deadline for voter registration in Pennsylvania is October 11. If you are a new voter (turn 18 on or before November 8) OR you have changed your name or moved (even if the move was within your neighborhood) since the last election you voted in you will need to fill out a registration form. We will have a voter registration table set up every Saturday from 8am-12pm in front of Taza D'Oro on Highland Avenue so come on down and register! If you live in Highland Park, East Liberty or Morningside and are unable to make it to our table on Saturdays you can reach out to me at mastephanou1(a)gmail.com if you would like us to stop by your house and register you. The victim turned around and saw the male pointing a black gun at her. The victim began screaming and running away. The actor fled the area when the female started yelling and running. When the suspect attempted to walk out of the store, Loss Prevention officers stopped him, at which time he pulled a firearm from his waistband. The suspect is a black male, 18-24 years old, 5'5," 120 Lbs. (173916) 9/15/16 Attempted Theft from Vehicle - 5400 block Stanton Avenue. Victim's vehicle was ransacked. Nothing missing. No sign of forced entry. (174519) 9/15/16 Theft from Vehicle - 5600 block Elgin Street. $3.00 in quarters was stolen from an unlocked vehicle. (174608) 9/15/16 Burglary - 6920 Bishop Street. Victim reported that (84) Oxycodone pills were stolen from her residence the same day that her ex-boyfriend moved out of the house. The victim does not believe he stole them. (174710) 9/17/16 Burglary - 5770 Butler Street (Unique Auto Wash). Officers responded to a burglar alarm and arrived to find an open door. A K-9 unit responded and cleared the business. Sheridan Avenue (Highland Park): Zone 5 Officers responded to an address on N. Sheridan Avenue for a male who was stabbed. Officers learned the male had been arguing with his ex-girlfriend. Officers went to the girlfriend's address several doors down on N. Sheridan and observed a blood found at the rear door. Officers gained entry to the home and found the female suspect in a hallway area of the residence. Brittany Rideout, 30, of Highland Park, told officers her ex-boyfriend came to her apartment to beat her up so she stabbed him. She was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault. (172157) 9/12/16 at 5:25 PM - Frankstown Avenue and N Homewood Avenue (Homewood): Zone 5 Officers Gallman, Cerrillos, Spangler, Connors, and Port Authority Det.Nieble were working a crime suppression assignment in the area when one of the officers who was set up on surveillance observed a male walk over to a light pole and pick up a Luden's cough drop bag. The male then opened the bag up and pulled out a small plastic bag and handed it to another male. The Luden's bag was then resealed and placed back on the ground. Officers detained the male who had gone into the bag and recovered (5) knotted baggies of marijuana from inside the Luden's cough drop bag. A rolled marijuana "blunt" was also found on the male. Larry West, 42, of Duquesne, was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession with intent to Deliver. (172676) 9/13/16 at 10:53 PM - Hamilton Avenue and Mulford Street (Homewood): Zone 5 Officers Spangler, Gallman, Cerrillos, Maddox and Connors were working a crime suppression assignment in the area. Officers learned through surveillance that a large group of people were congregating around a black and maroon Jeep in front of Bett's Market. The vehicle pulled away from the curb and committed a traffic violation. Officers initiated a traffic stop and when speaking with the driver they asked if there was anything they should know about in the car. The driver told the officers there was a marijuana under the driver seat. Officers recovered a small mason jar filled with marijuana under the driver's seat and a small baggie of marijuana from the glovebox. Howard Lavonte, 24, Wilkinsburg, was charged with Possession of a Small Amount of Marijuana. (173574) 9/14/16 at 7:41 PM - 6600 block Hedge Street (Lincoln-Lemington): Zone 5 officers responded to a domestic at this location. Specifically, the 911 caller told dispatchers that they could hear a female voice screaming for help as they walked past the house. Officers arrived on scene and attempted to make contact with the occupants of the house. While waiting for someone to answer the door, officers could smell a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the residence. Eventually, a man came to the door. Upon seeing the police outside, the male closed the door and retreated back into the house. A perimeter was secured and SWAT was requested. The male eventually surrendered peacefully. He was identified as David Ellsworth Brown-Hatcher, 39, of Lincoln-Lemington. The following items were recovered from the residence: A stolen Taurus .44 Magnum revolver, Ruger .357 revolver, Remington 870 Express shotgun, ammunition, (2) digital scales, marijuana, drug packaging materials, and over $1000.00 in cash. No female was ever located in the residence. It is believed that she left before officers arrived. Brown-Hatcher was arrested and charged with felony drug and firearm violations. (174143)
