Hello neighbors. I just dug up a plethora of extraneous mint plants, roots and all, from our yard. They are sitting in a bucket of water near the sidewalk at the front of our house. 1015 Portland Street Take as many plants as you wish, but please leave the bucket. Bring your own baggies or containers to transport the wet plants, please. Please help yourself. If you are not going to cook with it or make tea immediately, here transplanting instructions, below. Enjoy! -Becky Transplanting Mint: Sprigs of mint are readily available from friends and neighbors, who no doubt have more mint than they want. Find a sunny or shady spot and transplant mint in spring or fall. 1 Dig a hole large enough to receive each new plant. If the soil is heavy, incorporate enough garden compost so the amended soil is one-third compost. This improves drainage. 2 Dig up a small section of mint with a garden trowel. Mint spreads by underground stolons, so you might be able to gently tug or dig up an isolated stem with roots. 3 Cut the tops of the mint stems to about 6 inches with scissors or a sharp knife. Shake off the soil, then plunge the roots in a jar of water to keep them hydrated. 4 Separate the stems from each other and trim off roots that are longer than the planting hole is deep. 5 Hold the rooted end in the planting hole and back fill with improved soil. Water until the soil is soaked and settles, then add more soil to level the planting site with the surrounding soil. 6 Apply a 1-inch layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark, around each stem. Pull the mulch away from the stems about 1 inch to prevent stem rot. 7 Water thoroughly two or three times a week, if it doesn't rain, until the roots become established. After that, water with 1 inch of water each week when it doesn't rain.

The Bryant Street Festival is tomorrow!

Hi Neighbors! We have a great line up of music, food vendors and artists ready to go at the Festival tomorrow! There will be Italian Ice, ice cream, juices, lemonade, and cupcakes to name a few of the treats in addition to our Bryant Street Restaurants and other food vendors. The Square Cafe food truck will be on Bryant Street from 9:00-12:00 for hungry yard sale shoppers. We have a fire truck scheduled from 1:00 -3:00 for kids and adults to check out. The Union Project will be there with their pottery wheel and there will be other hands on activities for kids. Artists selling jewelry, leather, soaps, pottery, paintings, pillows, mosaics and more will be lining the street from 12:00 noon until 5:00 pm. Live performances by local talent are scheduled throughout the afternoon: Historonics/Rock/R&B (noon-1pm) Kizomba/Angolan Dance(1pm-1:30pm) Absolution Key/Rock/Americana(1:30pm-2:30pm) Kizomba (2:30pm-3pm) Gavin McCall/Folk(3pm-4pm) Kizomba (4pm-4:30pm) See you there!

Please help with the neighborhood yard sale

Everyone, The yard sale is on Sunday and everything is ready to go. This is a plea for help in handing out map listings around Highland Park. The visitors are appreciate to the volunteers and it is fun watching the crowds wander around looking for the next sale to investigate. Posts are staffed in two-hour shifts between 9am and 1pm. There are four posts: Highland & Stanton, Negley & Hampton, Highland & Bryant, and Bunkerhill & North Saint Clair. I provide a signed certificate of appreciation for any child or student who volunteers for the event. It's a great opportunity for parents and their children to perform a public service, demonstrating how helping others can be fulfilling. Consider spending a bit of your time volunteering.
