Break-in

Dear neighbors: Our house on Browning Road was broken into last week while we were on vacation. Two young men were seen on our street about 1pm. One kept watch in front of a neighbor's house, we believe, while the other smashed a (very small!) kitchen window and climbed inside. He spent considerable time in the house, especially on the second floor, where he went methodically through all drawers and closets. He took small items---iPad, wristwatch, some jewelry, liquor and money. (Only pocket change and our small stash of foreign currency, so if someone tries to pay you in euros or Canadian money, call the police.) We believe he emptied out my husband's messenger bag to carry off the items. (The black bag has football emblems on it--my husband is a football official--and is embroidered with his name--Jeff Martin. If you see it, he'd very much like to have it back.) This all happened on a sunny afternoon, pretty brazen. Nothing ransacked, but nice things stolen. Of course we have had the police here, and they've been terrific. We want to thank all our Highland Park neighbors for their help and support. (Especially the anonymous, but very kind couple who returned some items that must have been dumped out of the football bag. Thank you! You saved my husband a lot of aggravation!) The police did warn us that most burglaries like this have happened in Sq Hill and Shadyside, but clearly the bad guys---probably drug users looking for cash and easily pawned items--have found us, too. Even though we have felt very safe on our wonderful little street, we are getting a big time security system. Sorry for the bad news. Stay vigilant, even in daylight! Nancy Martin Sent from my iPad
