house break-in

We are in the 1000 block of Euclid. Thus morning (Tuesday) about 1115, burglars came through our back door. My kids had been outside all morning playing, and when I left with the little guys for swim lessons, I didn't lock it since my husband and oldest were still at home. My husband and son were working on the third floor when my husband heard voices and came downstairs. The thieves ran out the back door, and my husband chased them down our alley. According to a PWSA worker who was observant and helpful, there were 2 of them and they drove away in a Jeep that was parked on Wellesley. They had gone through our living room and dining room, and upstairs into my bedroom, and ransacked the dressers. Pretty sure the thieves had been watching the house to see when I left - they had no way of knowing my husband and son were still there because the van was gone. The police were very helpful as were the detectives who came to take fingerprints etc. Fortunately everyone is ok. The police said to definitely let the listserv know what happened, so people can continue to be observant and vigilant. Tips from the police: keep your doors locked at all times. alarm systems are great. Dogs are a good deterrent.

HP: AutoZone is NOT what makes the East End special

As you may have heard, the owners of the former Babyland location (Penn/Negley) want to put an AutoZone there. They're looking to tear down 2 buildings, as well as get some variances for their parking, etc. as they will be encroaching on some residential homes. I wasn't in Pittsburgh when someone decided the "first house built in Pittsburgh" was to be torn down (I only have postcards to know what that house looked like), but if you didn't know, that house was on the corner of Penn & Negley. (I believe where Babyland's parking lot now sits). But to think a box store like AutoZone would occupy that same space is just disgusting. Plus, I can't see what it will add to the neighborhood...especially a neighborhood that is growing with so many small, great fantastic businesses. Highland Park - porch roof repair

Hi ell, I have a porch roof that has a low slope which needs to be recoated, shingled, or some other alternative. Has anyone dealt with this issue successfully? Apparently shingles are not recommended and the last time I had it black coated, it didn't adhere. Thanks. Tom Savits
