Join us for summer camp! We will be kicking off this season with Design Camp. Students will make their own magazine, duct tape mannequin, and learn tips from local designers! Each camp is designed around STEAM topics (science, technology, ART, and math). Other camps include Video Game Design, Movie Making, Crafternoons, Rainbow Loom and more! Read about all our camps and register here. > > Summer Campers will also be a part of a pilot program to implement badging (think leveling up in a video game or earning a merit badge). This pilot is in partnership with City of Learning, Mozilla BadgeKit and the Sprout Fund. Badges earned signify the student's accomplishment in various skills, knowledge or disposition (eg: empathy). Assemble will be offering unique badges for each summer camp. These badges will be recognized by other organizations and schools as a records of student success. We are thrilled to be a part of this process! > June Events: > Friday, June 6th @ 6pm - Transformed Linearities (Unblurred) > Transformed Linearities is a solo exhibition by Julie Mallis, opening June 6 at Assemble Gallery during Unblurred. This exhibition will feature watercolor screen prints, digital prints, video art and an interactive projection installation. The prints are of abstract landscapes filled with hypnagogic lines, bold palettes and smooth shapes. The prints also serve as prototypes for the installation, a piece that invites gallery visitors to come inside and become active contributors of the work by attaching pre-cut materials and shapes. Additionally, a colorful projection lands on the installation, adding to its overall atmosphere. More info here! > > Saturday, June 7th @ 6-8 pm - Open House > Want to see what Assemble's youth program participants have been up to this school year? Eager to learn more about our STEAM youth programs in general? Join us for an epic showcase and open house, featuring the work of Saturday Crafternoon and MakeIt! kids. We'll have 3D-printed tessellations, laser-cut puzzles, Garfield postcards, Frankenpets, and more! Info Here. > > Saturday, June 7th @ 8-10 pm- Volunteerapalooza! > Volunteerapalooza is all about YOU - our volunteers! We want to celebrate the end of this amazing program year by demoing some Make-n-Take activities (spoiler alert: electric jewelry), snacking pizza, and slurping an adult beverage or two! BTW - this is a great opportunity to stop in and see what Assemble is all about. Meet other volunteers, say hey to our board members and play Super Mario Bros with a giaaaaaant NES controller! Click here for more info! > > Sunday, June 15th @ 11am-3pm - Complimenting Pittsburgh Painting Class > Learn paint scenes of Pittsburgh with local artist Ryan Ian McCormick. The course teaches students how to use just two colors (complimentary colors) to create vibrant scenes of The Steel City. The "complimentary color technique" was invented by McCormick. He created this approach due to his colorblindness and inability to see "in-between colors." He uses colors on the opposite end of the color wheel because they are easier for him to differentiate between. So, come out and learn this new, and unique way to paint landscapes of Pittsburgh! > > Friday, June 20th @ 5-7pm- Youth Maker Night > Youth Maker Nights are a chance for youth and tweens (ages 10-15) to hang out, chillax and create in a community setting. Hang out with other youth and our Teaching Artists while participating in a variety of activities. Each night will have a theme. This program is in collaboration with the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh’s MAKESHOP. Let us know if you’ve been to a Youth Maker Night there! We will have a stamp for you.This program is part of our Making the Future Grant from Cognizant. Snacks provided! Writing & English Instruction

Greetings, neighbors, I'm back to offer one-to-one English instruction and enrichment to students, adults, and English Language Learners. I have nearly 20 years of experience, hold current certification and clearances in PA as an English teacher (grades 7-12), and have taught high school and/or college English and writing classes since 2001. I have a Master of Arts in Teaching Language Arts and a PhD in English - Composition and TESOL. I've taught students, adults, English Language Learners, students with disabilities, and future teachers. I'm also a published writer, editor, and researcher on topics related to English education. My hourly fees fall well below what some of the tutoring companies charge in our area. I typically meet students in a coffee shop or library. I am happy to work with minor children in their homes with an adult present. I'm available during the day, evenings, and most weekends. I've recently just wrapped up a successful year with a Chinese college student who graduated and moved to San Francisco. She'd be happy to provide a reference. The owners of the Babyland properties have filed an application with the City to build an Autozone retail outlet at Penn and Negley with a number of variances. Greetings, I trust that everyone has been enjoying the nice weather. Please note that the next Zone 5 Public Safety Meeting is scheduled for 7 pm Tuesday,June 10 at the Union Project. Lyz Styles of the City of Pittsburgh will be the guest speaker. Her topic will focus around Zone 5 planning a forum for the selection of a new Police Chief and the August 5 National Night out. Next meetings: July 8 and August 12. Please plan to attend.
