[Highland Park] important info for gardeners

Hello, folks. It's your friendly neighborhood horticulturist... I just was noticing at some local stores (which shall remain nameless...) that there are tomato, pepper, basil and many other plants available for purchase. I know most of us have spring fever, but PLEASE let me caution you against giving in. Unless you have a place to keep those plants indoors until at least the end of April, do NOT purchase. These plants will die. You will be crushed. You will be frustrated. You will have to buy all over again... The average last frost date for the Pittsburgh area is April 29th. Honestly, that's still way too early to plant tender plants like tomatoes outdoors. Lots of people consider Mother's Day to be the tipping point, but you could still see some frost after that, so be sure you have a way to protect/cover your plants if you plant them out then. My safe answer is always to wait until Memorial Day to plant them outdoors. You can always buy them before them and keep them in their containers and work on hardening them off (putting them out during the day, bringing them in at night to get them more slowly accustomed to the outdoors). Just remember: the stores don't mind if you buy now and your plants die. That means you're going to come back for more later. In addition to all that: remember that you have some local folks who grow a much wider variety of plants. Last year I got some GREAT heirloom tomatoes, some berry plants and some flowers from Garfield Farm. And this year, I'm actually growing about 20 varieties of tomatoes, as well as 6 hot pepper, 3 sweet pepper, 3 tomatillo and many others (almost all heirloom, all non-GMO) of my own, and will be offering plants for sale closer to real planting dates. [Highland Park] Another German Shepard Sighting

I saw what I am assuming is the same German Shepard that others have been seeing at about 12pm on Saturday. He was running down Elgin to Negley. There was a cop following him and trying to catch him. I could not get the dog to come to me either. Hopefully the police office was able to catch him so he will be safe. Becky Sent from my iPhone
