[PennDOT left-cmyk] Traffic Advisory Oct. 17, 2014 Baker Street Turning Lane Closure begins Monday in Pittsburgh Pittsburgh, PA - PennDOT District 11 is announcing the right hand turn lane on Baker Street in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, will close to traffic beginning Monday, Oct. 20, weather permitting. Beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 20 the right hand turn lane from Baker Street to Butler Street (Route 8) will close as crews install a catch basin. The turn lane will be closed around-the-clock through 7 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23. Motorists will still be able to turn right from Baker Street to Butler Street. The work is part of the Route 8 Heths Run Bridge replacement project. The existing bridge built in 1913-14 has been replaced with a new structure. Additionally, the project includes reconstruction of 870 feet of Butler Street, improvements on One Wild Place, drainage, and sidewalk and signal upgrades. Only minor work remains. Motorists are advised to use caution and expect possible delays.

Habanero Decorations

I've been quite tickled by the replies to my post regarding Halloween vandal protection/punishment. Thank you! Just a couple of quick notes for those of you who plan to try this. 1. You can purchase habanero, scorpion or ghost chili oil on Amazon or often, at Penn Mac in the strip. 2. Use gloves when you apply it to the decorations and do so in a well ventilated area. If you have an exhaust fan in your kitchen, that will do. Place newspaper or deli paper down on your work space first. Use vinegar to wipe down the area when you're finished. 3. Let the decorations and/or pumpkins sit indoors overnight so the oil will soak in. 4. Keep the oiled decorations out of reach of your children and pets. 5. Remember to use gloves when handling or disassembling your decorations. 6. If you are vandalized, savor the image of the after effects of these oils in the perpetrators. Have fun and be careful!! Calling all ghosts and goblins! The Highland Park Community Council’s annual Halloween parade and festivities will take place Saturday, Nov. 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Highland Park. We will gather at Oak Grove then parade to the fountain, where we will decorate homemade cookies and have snacks.* Volunteers to escort our parade participations and to help decorate cookies are needed. In years past, it has been just too difficult to decide which costume was the best, so I decided to dispense with the contest and just have a costume party. To find Oak Grove, turn right upon reaching the road at the main entrance of the park, pass the road leading to the Farm House. The little clearing with a bench and sign saying “Oak Grove” is just a few more yards. You can’t miss it, but just in case we will have signs or volunteers to point the way. The parade will begin shortly after 11 in order to give everyone time to gather. To volunteer or if you have questions, contact Teri Rucker via e-mail or by phone at 412-482-2533.
