Bryan Boak on the South side is very good, Five Star Dentistry. I've been going ot him for years and have referred a number of people who all have been satisfied. 2. We like Myles Dental on Highland Av. 412-441-3333 3. Over the past number of days, there has been a, (IMHO) awesome dialogue happening here about public safety, crime and community. I have received a number of emails, thanking me for my posts, and I want to say THANKS to everyone who has voiced ideas as well as to those who are reading. It is a great piece of community building, and I'm glad we are all doing it. That said, actions always speak louder than words, and so I want to add some actions to my words while inviting everyone else to action as well. Organized Block Watch groups provide the most significant tool that we as residents can employ to help make our community safe for all. And, in a dynamic and improving neighborhood like Highland Park cooperation and communication between block watch groups can take us a long way towards a space we are all happy to reside, work, and recreate within. If I understand correctly, there are no known organized block watch groups in Highland Park at this time. So WE can do much to make our community safer by getting engaged in this way. I understand that Lynn Banker-Burns, the chair of the Public Safety Committee for the HPCC has info on starting a Block Watch, and she would be a great person to tell if you start a group. In addition, here is a link to info from the Pittsburgh Dept Public Safety Web site: http://pittsburghpa.gov/publicsafety/bwib/register There are two "local" resources or groups that you can get involved with both to learn more or to strengthen public Safety in our community. The HPCC has a Public Safety Committee, and there is the Zone 5 Public Safety Group which meets monthly at the Union Project. It is generally the 2nd Tuesday of the month, 7PM-8PM. I highly recommend it because the Community Relations Officer for Zone 5, Officer Gay, attends and Commander O'Connor is often there for at least part of the meeting. Officer Gay hands out crime stats and answers questions about them. There is also great dialogue between individuals who live inside HP as well as the other neighborhoods that make up Zone 5. There is always a brief informative program as well. For example at the Oct 8th meeting the speaker was: > Guest Speaker: Maria Bethel, Disruptive Properties Coordinator > > Maria Bethel will be speaking at the start of the meeting about the City of Pittsburgh's Disruptive Properties Ordinance and properties in Zone 5 that have received Disruptive Properties notices. Which speaks directly to some of the issues that have been raised here on this email list. In other words, resources and assistance is out there, and our job is to get engaged! For more info on the Zone 5 Public Safety meeting, watch this list as Emily Keebler the group's president posts info each month, or contact her directly. There is also a city-wide public safety meeting coming up: > Twice a year, half of the Zone Councils work together to hold a Citywide Public Safety Meeting. This fall, the meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 23rd at 6:00pm at the South Hill Retirement Residence, 125 Ruth St, 15211. Please join residents and public safety employees from around the City to discuss public safety at this special event. I have attended these in the past and they are good. You have an opportunity to meet public safety officials, and learn about what is happening all over the city. For me, it places concerns and idssues into a bigger context and helps me see how the City is working to address concerns. Crime isn't new, and waves of problems come and go as focus, attention and actions are directed towards them. About 18 years ago, while I still lived in Lawrenceville, I had friends here in HP. One sunny Saturday morning, they were planning to take off on a bike ride. Their garage door was open and they had pulled the car into the driveway to be able to get the bikes off of the wall (held up on hooks) when they realized they had forgotten something and they went up the basement steps. They were only gone about 5 minutes, but when they re-entered the garage, the two bikes had been stolen right off of the walls! They were so upset. I relay this story because creating a safe neighborhood is an ongoing process. Like brushing your teeth or eating. It can't be a reaction to an isolated event, but an ongoing practice and the more of us who participate, the better the outcomes. So, I want to challenge you- residents of HP! Talk to your neighbors on the left and right of you, and the rest of the folks on your block. Start a block watch. It is easier than you think, and the rewards for doing it far outweigh the time and energy it might take. THEN, make sure to alert Lynn or Emily that your Block Watch has been formed. [Highland Park] Mad Mex benefit dinner for CAPA instrumental students

Hi lovely neighbors. We'd like to invite you to a benefit dinner for CAPA Instrumental Programs at the Shadyside Mad Mex on Tues., Nov 5 at 7pm. It's $55, and $48 of that goes to our kids. It's buffet style and includes one margarita or a beer, so you can come down after a hard day of voting and celebrate/drown your sorrows depending on how your candidate is faring. :-) We're limited to 50 seats, but space is still available. And the bridge is open! As you may know, arts funding is one of the first things to go when school budgets get cut. The money raised will go towards activities such as competitions and community outreach programs, opportunities that many of our kids would not be able to participate in without our help.
