[Highland Park] An Open Letter to PGH District 7 Council Candidates about PGH Public Schools

Hello Neighbors: As many of you know, I have spent a great deal of time over the last several years advocating for our local public schools. One of my main challenges from the community perspective (my kids are not yet in school) is that staff working for the School District, City and County typically don't have strong working relationships. While I meet many hard working and well meaning people, I think all our efforts would be much more effective if our elected leaders clearly understood their roles and responsibilities and established some common goals. We have an exceptional School Board Representative in Dr. Regina Holley. I have sent an open letter to all of the Pittsburgh District 7 council candidates asking them to work with Dr. Holley and sponsor a summit of elected officials (see attached). The mission of the summit would be to protect, improve and revitalize our schools by coordinating efforts among the different branches of government. While I understand that it is the responsibility of the School Board to run the schools, the success of our public schools has an impact on all of us. We all benefit when our schools succeed. Home values increase; crime rates fall; and we create opportunities for all our children, no matter how modest their means. The ability to learn is not predetermined by sex, race or family income. Smart students are not born smart, they are built smart by engaged parents, effective teachers, exceptional principals and caring communities working together. If you support this idea, please let your candidate know how you feel. If you think this is a terrible idea, you can let me know that too - but please be nice! This letter is not intended in any way to endorse any candidate, and I have sent it to all the candidates who participated in the HPCC District 7 forum. Apologies for the lack of date/details on my previous post re Highland Ave Bridge opening...It is Wednesday, 23 October, (and someone posted that the official PGH Halloween date is actually on Halloween). It is from 5-8 pm, with the ribbon cutting to occur at 6 pm. There will be city officials there, including councilman and mayoral candidate Bill Peduto. Ginny has been holding on throughout this trying period since March, and the HP listserv subscribers have been fantastic about publicizing her difficulties and supporting her and the other S. Highland Ave merchants. Disclosure: I recently joined the Smiley Team! :) On Ginny's behalf, we all thank everyone, and hope you can join us tomorrow night (5-8) for the official opening! [Highland Park] Munch the cat needs a furever home :)

Hello neighbors! Since July, we have been fostering an awesome and loving kitty that our friend was caring for at her previous apartment (she's since downsized to a place with pet limits). Munch is an older female lovebug. She requires a pet-free home with ample access to snuggles, beds, and Fancy Feast ;-) When we took her in we had her treated for lupus, which explains her whimsical lips and tongue. Her symptoms are easily controlled with a basic steroid injection once or twice a month. We have attempted to integrate her with our four male cats, but it seems ENTIRELY too stressful for her. That being said, she's been living in our bedroom since July and it doesn't seem fair for her to be so limited! She needs sweet freedom!
