[Highland Park] Thanks for garage door maintenance recommendations

Thank you to all the people who recommended garage door services to me. I used Leet at Garage Door Doctor, Inc. (412)829-2007, and I was so pleased I would like to share my experience. In January, 2011, I had installed a new Sears Garage Door Opener for my old garage door. About 9 months later it started to have problems with not opening and closing completely. I had purchased a year service contract so I had Sears come out to work on it. The Sears service tech did some work on it, saying there might be a problem with the RPM sensor connectivity, but he was not sure. He did some adjusting of the cycle and it seemed to be working all right, so he left. Afterwards. off and on, I continued to have some problems where I would have to cycle several times to get the door to open or close completely. Because the door and the hardware were old, I thought maybe it needed to be tuned and adjusted better than I could do. This is when I sent out my request earlier this week. Several days ago I called Leet Sommerfeld at Garage Door Doctor and he came to my house to check out the problem. After about 5 minutes he said he thought the problem was with the opener motor, not the door installation. He took off the cover and saw a code light blinking. He asked for my Manual and quickly figured out that the code meant there was a problem with the RPM sensor bearing being loose and not making consistent contact. He replaced it with one he had with him and the door cycled perfectly. I was impressed with how quickly he was able to properly diagnose and fix the problem, in contrast with the Sears tech's failure to do so. At that point I would have been happy if he had just charged me the agreed-upon service call ($85) and left. Instead, he spent an additional half hour tweaking the railings and other hardware and oiling various parts, all of which had the effect of improving the ease with which the door opened and closed. I could not have been happier with the knowledge and professionalism he brought to my job. Mike Hughes 720-261-6322(cell)

[Highland Park] Pastoral Notes

Two deaths the past few days in our wider parish family. On Wednesday, long-time Highland Park, St. Clair Street neighbor and friend of St. Andrew's (and especially of our music program), Jeanne Schaeffer. Jeanne's husband John died in February, after a long illness. Arrangements are pending and services will be later this spring, at Sacred Heart Church. And with appreciation to Anne Barnes for passing on the news of the death on Friday of long-time St. Andrean, distinguished author, and good friend, Buddy Nordan. Buddy and Alicia had moved to Ohio several years ago, and he had been in declining health for some time. I don't know about arrangements yet, but I'm sure there will be something at the University, where he was for so many years a key leader in the Creative Writing program. Notes of sympathy and friendship could be sent to Alicia at 200 Laurel Lake Drive, E 164, Hudson, Ohio 44236. I would ask your prayers as well for David Waugh, Brenner Brown's uncle, who is undergoing surgery today for a subdural haematoma. Blessings, BruceR

sad to send this......and sorry if it is your cat..... it was black with white underneath - neck, belly & legs; very long white whiskers. a Good Samaritan placed it on some papers and bag on the sidewalk in the 1100 block of N. Highland (near the bus stop); near the corner of Hampton. While looking for a box to put it in a City truck was driving around and as I was going to to cat the driver was doing the same. He placed it in the box and took it. Would not leave it with me sine I was not the owner. I wanted to let the owner(s) take it and bury it or if no one claimed it then we would bury it - we have several cats so I was just thinking of what I would want if it was one of ours.

[Highland Park] To the Person Who Threatened to Poison My Dogs

All -- We have two small dogs, fenced in a back yard here on North Negley. Most days, the dogs either wear citrus spray-collars to deter them from barking, or are not here at all. Last week, though, they were here while we had contractors working on our house for two days. The presence of strangers in the house freaked them out, so they barked despite the collars. The barking apparently annoyed one of our neighbors. But instead of coming over and talking to us, he chose to post this sign on our back fence: If anyone else has has received such a letter, please get in touch with me and local police because you are a victim of a crime. To the person who did this, please take note: I'm an Assistant United State Attorney here in Pittsburgh. As an employee of the United States Department of Justice, I'm required to report all threats to my family to my office, the F.B.I., and local authorities. Please be assured that your letter (which has your DNA all over it, since you inexplicably wrote it by hand) will be forwarded to the F.B.I. as well as local law enforcement. Also, please understand that we have cameras on various parts of our property. From here on out, cameras will be operating along our fences: so if you do throw "poisoned meat" or anything else over our fence, you'll be photographed doing so. It is unfortunate that things have come to this. If the aggrieved person had come over here and talked things over like a man, this all could have been avoided. Instead, he took the cowardly approach (right down to the attempt at misdirection at the bottom of the letter) of threatening to kill two small dogs. Sincerely, Donovan Cocas
