Hello Neighbors, The Morningside Area Community Council (MACC) is holding a planning meeting on October 17th from 6pm to 9pm at the Morningside VFW to gather input on proposed field improvements at Natoli and Heth's Fields. The MACC formed a steering committee and hired Pashek Associates to develop a plan that addressed maintenance, safety and upkeep of the fields which receive extensive use. This Friday, October 12th, there will be a concert featuring the music of Robert Farrell. Music is both choral and instrumental. Bob is a life-long Pittsburgher, Carnegie Mellon graduate, and composes beautiful music, both sacred and secular, often with jazzy chords sprinkled throughout. There will be a wine and appetizer reception afterward where you can meet the composer and musicians. I promise that you will not be disappointed! [Highland Park] Walk to Cure Psoriasis - This Saturday!

It's that time of year again! This Saturday is the annual Walk to Cure Psoriasis. My son, Quinn, is one of the youth ambassadors for this year's walk. He's turning 14 this Friday, and he decided that the Walk is so important to him that he wanted to invite his friends and family to walk with him instead of having a party or receiving gifts. Quinn has had psoriasis over 90% of his body for almost his entire life, so he's no stranger to the stares and rude comments people with psoriasis can experience. He's a friendly and outgoing kid, thanks in large part to the fact that the folks in our neighborhood are so accepting and kind, but he has had to learn to filter out a lot of social garbage already. And it's his fervent hope that someone, someday, will find a cure for psoriasis, so other kids like him won't have to deal with what he's had to. I've had psoriasis all my life and psoriatic arthritis for the past 15 years, and watching my son grow up with psoriasis has been rough. The impact of psoriasis is both physical and emotional. There are far too many days when pain or itching gets in the way, and we've both experienced more than our share of bullying and unkindness. Research is showing that the damage isn't just skin deep. People with psoriasis are more likely to have heart disease, diabetes, and a host of other health problems thanks to our bodies' over-active inflammatory response. And people with psoriasis are far more likely to experience depression and twice as likely to consider suicide as are people without the disease. And, of course, up to 30 percent of people with psoriasis also develop psoriatic arthritis - a painful and sometimes debilitating joint disorder. Quinn and I have been lucky enough to have a wonderful support network of family and friends to help us stay positive about our disease. But neither of us has gotten significant relief from any of the treatments we've tried, and we're both deeply invested in the search for a cure. We will be participating in the Pittsburgh Wak to Cure Psoriasis, and we hope you'll consider making a donation on our behalf, or walking as part of our team. All, Tonight I completed an upgrade of the server that runs the Highland Park Neighborhood mailing list. All of the improvements are "under the hood" so the list should appear to operate the same way you all expect it to. Please let me know if you notice any problems. A known issue: * the spam reputation score of the new server will initially be low, making it more likely that mail sent via the Highland Park Neighborhood list will be caught in spam filters for a while. The spam reputation score will improve over time. You don't need to read the rest of this message unless you are interested in some of the details of the changes. -Rudy Some of those "under the hood changes": * The URL for list functions now resides at https://mail.highlandparkpa.com/listinfo/neighborhood (using SSL to protect passwords and other information in transit, and to identify the site as legitimate). The old URLs should still work, redirecting to the new ones. * The underlying Mailman list management software was upgraded from mailman-2.1.5 to mailman-2.1.12 (both Red Hat versions). Hello Neighbors, Our next Neighborhood Tasting night is coming up this Monday October 15th! Join us as the chef pairs 3 dishes with Arsenal Cider, a local ciderhouse in Lawrenceville. The tasting includes: Hop Cider as a starter Seared Scallops with butternut squash-proscuitto risotto, oaked cider beurre blanc (paired with a bourbon barrel aged apple wine) Asian pear and Mizuna salad with sesame-ginger dressing (paired with a Pear Cider) Pulled Pork tostada, napa cabbage slaw, tangy-spicy plum sauce (paired with a Plum-Peach Cider) The tasting is $35 per person which includes 4 ciders and the 3 course pairing.
