Renowned Organist, John Cannon Performs to Help Restore Historic OrganSaturday, November 10th, 7:00pm Julliard alumnus and renowned concert organist and pianist, John Cannon will perform in concert at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 250 North Highland Avenue on November 10, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. The suggested donation is $10 at the door. John Cannon is one of the staff organists of Heinz Memorial Chapel at the University of Pittsburgh, and Minister of Music and Artist-In-Residence at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church. Cannon has given organ and piano concerts across the country, from Washington, D.C. and New York City to San Francisco. He has also toured Portugal, Spain, Korea, India, South Africa and Zimbabwe. From 1996 through 2003, Cannon toured with the Promise Keepers band and played for the Stand in the Gap sacred assembly in Washington D.C. Cannon’s playing is brilliant and the music, an extension of his sparkling personality, overflows with joy. Cannon will be performing on Eastminster’s historic Aeolian-Skinner organ. Aeolian-Skinner is considered to be the finest builder of American neo-romantic organs. The organs that still exist are regarded as the crown jewels of American churches. Eastminster’s instrument is unique in that it is the only remaining Aeolian-Skinner organ in Pittsburgh in original and completely workable condition. Further, it represents the only Pittsburgh Aeolian-Skinner organ to integrate romantic and baroque organ styles. It is one of the last organs designed and tonally finished by the great G. Donald Harrison before his death in 1956. Proceeds from this concert will aid in the maintenance of Eastminster’s treasured organ. A Literary Night is planned for the occasion of the 15th annual St. Andrew's Lecture this Friday evening, October 26, 8 p.m., at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 5801 Hampton Street, Highland Park, Pittsburgh 15206. Our featured speaker for the evening is Jan Beatty. Jan Beatty is Undergraduate Director of the Creative Writing Program at Carlow University, and for the past eighteen years she has hosted and produced Prosody, a public radio program heard locally now on NPR affiliate WESA-90.5 FM. She is also the editor of “Chapter & Verse, a bi-weekly poetry feature in the Pittsburgh City Paper, and she leads the well-known “Madwomen in the Attic” poetry workshops. A prize-winning poet, Jan Beatty’s chapbook, Ravage, was released in May 2012 by Lefty Blondie Press and her next, The Switching Yard, will be forthcoming in 2013. Her third book, Red Sugar, was published by the University of Pittsburgh Press and was a finalist for the 2009 Paterson Poetry Prize. Her other books include Boneshaker (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2002), which was a finalist for the Milton Kessler Award, Mad River, winner of the 1994 Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize, and a limited-edition chapbook, Ravenous. Her poetry has been included in numerous journals and anthologies, and she is a frequent reader at important national and regional literary events. In addition to sharing her perspectives on "the Pittsburgh poetry scene," Jan will be introducing us to three new Pittsburgh poets: Joan E. Bauer is the author of The Almost Sound of Drowning (Main Street Rag). Her poetry has appeared in journals including 5 AM, New Renaissance, Poet Lore andQuarterly West, and the anthologies Come Together: Imagine Peace (Bottom Dog Press), Along These Rivers: Poetry and Photography from Pittsburgh (Quadrant), and Voices from the Attic (Carlow University), among others. In 2007, she won the Earl Birney Poetry Prize from Prism International, and her poetry has twice been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. With Jimmy Cvetic, she curates and hosts the Hemingway's Summer Poetry Series in Pittsburgh. Sheila Carter-Jones credits the domestic working women in the small coal mining community where she grew up as the spiritual source of her poetic inspiration. Her poetry is published in anthologies and journals including Crossing Limits, Pennsylvania Review, Riverspeak, and Coal: A Poetry Anthology, and a chapbook, Blackberry Cobbler Song. Her book of poetry, Three Birds Deep, was recently selected by Elizabeth Alexander for publication by Lotus Press. Celeste Gainey holds a BFA in film and television from New York University and an MFA in creative writing/poetry from Carlow University. Her chapbook, In the land of speculation & seismography, selected by Elioses Klein Healy as a runner-up for the 2010 Robin Becker Chapbook Prize was Published by Seven Kitchens Press was published in 2011. Most recently, her poems have appeared in Columbia Poetry Review and BLOOM. The St. Andrew's Lecture is free (though free-will contributions are gladly received), and a festive reception follows the program in Brooks Hall.
