Office of Councilman Patrick Dowd - February 2011 News and Updates <http://www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us/district7/assets/newsletters/District7 _newsletter_September_2010.pdf> As we quickly approach the 1st anniversary of the dreaded February, 2010, Snowmageddon, the City has recently produced and distributed to every City household the Winter Weather Emergency Resource Guide. The purpose of the guide is to provide vital information about both routing and emergency snow removal operations, and to present the City's new emergency snow routes. The Emergency Snow Routes are located throughout the city and are marked by "Emergency Snow Route" and have a picture of a snow flake on them (a detailed map was provided to each household). After a snow emergency of 10 inches or more has been declared, please do not park your vehicle on streets designated as part of the emergency route. Major emergency snow route streets in District 7 include but are not limited to: Washington Boulevard, Butler Street, North Negley and North Highland Avenues, Stanton Avenue, Black/Mossfield Street, Penn Avenue, Liberty Avenue, Baum Boulevard, Biglelow Boulevard, and 40th, 44th and 45th Streets. And a few winter weather reminders from the Department of Public Works: * Please do not call 311 during a snow and ice event to request street plowing or salting until at least 24 hours after the event has ended or longer if a snow emergency has been declared; * Please do not deposit snow from cars or private property onto city streets; * Fallen trees on private property are the responsibility of the property owner; the City will only remove a privately owned tree if it is blocking a public right of way; The Department of Public Works is responsible for approximately 1,200 miles of city, county and state roads and streets-115 of which are in District 7. Your patience during a major snow event is truly appreciated. Friday, February 18, 7:30am-9:00am; Councilman Dowd and staff will be in Lawrenceville at Perk Me Up, 4407 Butler Street. Thursday, February 24, 7:00pm-8:00pm; Councilman Dowd and staff will be hosting the Morningside Council to Go at the Union Project, 801 N. Negley Avenue. PLEASE NOTE: There is NOT an additional Morningside Council to Go on February 28 as reported in the current edition of the Morningside News. The next Morningside Council to Go will be April 28 at the Morningside VFW. COMMUNITY EVENTS Focus: Lawrenceville Every Tuesday from 11am-12pm - The Family PlayShop at the Carnegie Library in Lawrenceville hosts a one-on-one program for children age 6 months to 4 years and their parents/guardians. Brothers and sisters under the age of 5 are welcome. In their children's room, you and your child can explore and learn together with developmentally appropriate toys and activities! They will host a different community resource professional each week to answer questions and provide materials. There will be an open house at 5:00pm, followed by the celebration at 6:30pm starting with a traditional Chinese lion dance. Additional District Interests Zone 2 and Zone 5 Citizen's Public Safety Councils are made up of community members from every neighborhood in the particular Public Safety Zone. Sunday February 27 - International Polar Bear Day <http://blog.pittsburghzoo.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/999-26A.jpg> Celebrate International Polar Bear Day with crafts, activities, polar bear enrichment, and a free energy saving kit at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium. Duquesne Light is giving away free energy kits (with paid admission), including Compact Fluorescent lightbulbs, to the first 200 Duquesne Light customers who come to the zoo that day. To get a kit, you must bring a recent bill with your account number on it (one kit per family). By simply changing bulbs, you will use less electricity and thereby reduce your carbon footprint (as well as save money) and help the bears. Change a bulb, save a bear...it's that simple. There's one more chance...to get your hands on these windows, participate in a community project that will be seen for the next 100 years, and learn the art of stained glass restoration. There are still spots left in our last Stained Glass Restoration Class. *Intensive 3 Day Restoration Workshop*: Friday-Sunday, Feb 18-20 (Fri. 6-9pm, Sat. 9-5pm, Sun. 9-4pm). Class fee: $200. [Highland Park] Kentucky Avenue School Open House

Dear Neighbors, I wanted to let everyone know that Kentucky Avenue School is having an open house on Saturday, February 26 from 11-2. If you are looking for a wonderful, creative school for your children that emphasizes small class size, differentiated instruction, problem-solving, social learning and ART, come and visit. KAS is a K-8 school located in the Third Presbyterian Church at the corner of 5th and Negley in Shadyside. Although the space is in a church, it is not a religiously-affiliated school. I've been teaching there for five years and my children attend there as well. I'd be happy to answer any questions about the school anyone has. Thanks, Aimee DeFoe

To all those who reponded to my perogie request, get this--I ended up sending meatballs and sauce from the Italian market in Bloomfield (the one on the side street with the large parking lot across the street). I had thought that I saw perogies there once in their freezer case but no. After contacting both Perogies Plus in McKees Rocks and Rosi's at the Pgh. Mills and learning that neither shipped anymore, I tried Bloomfield, walked down to the Bloomfield Bridge Tavern thinking they might sell me some, (they were closed in early afternoon) I went with the meatballs since, after all, my relatives in RI probably would rather have meatballs. Don't tell anybody but I managed to ship them, a container of meat marinara sauce and 7 bottles of Yuengling beer in one of those post office, flat rate, 2 day boxes, for $14.95. Go Steelers. --
