Hi! I'm in a local homeschooling cooperative, and the Spring semester class schedule is up for registration! Classes take place in the Wilkins School Community Center, in Regent Square, and start the first week of March. The Enrichment Class webpage can be accessed here: http://www.pals-enrichment.info/classes Please be sure to read the info on how to register, as it is a new system, with a few teething troubles, then go on to see what classes are offered in each time slot! There are classes at every hour for kids aged 4-teen, and one class for 2-3 year-olds happening in the morning. [Highland Park] HPCC seeking Kids Committee Chair

Dear Neighbors, Many of you have gotten to know me as the chair of the HPCC kids committee and I have enjoyed meeting many of you through this opportunity. I am sad to say that after a really fun three years on the job, I have to step down as of this winter. My family and job responsibilities have increased greatly since I took on the position. However, the HPCC board is currently seeking one or more enthusiastic leaders to take over the committee, and I am available to consult with anyone willing to dive in. I also can provide all of my documents, including mock ups for fliers, recipes (for things like ziploc bag ice cream), etc. I will provide you the names/emails of our core group of volunteers who will be happy to show up and assist you in running events. Also, I've got lots of materials including outdoor games/sporting items, craft materials, and things like scissors, paintbrushes, foam stickers, beads, craft sticks, etc. for your use. We inherited lots of items from the HPCC day camp too. In addition, there is a budget for the kids committee and you will be reimbursed for activity expenses. This is a great volunteer position for someone with young kids who love to accompany mom or dad on exciting adventures. My kids are older now, but they had lots of fun helping me think of enjoyable activities to do with kids and helping to run various events and shopping for snacks, supplies, and prizes. You don't have to have a Ph.D (or even a B.A) in education to be successful at this post, trust me! You just need to be fun, flexible, energetic, and talk to kids about what they like to do. When I started doing this, we went back to basics a little bit and introduced relay races and a scavenger hunt. These simple activities were wildly successful, because many kids don't get to do these types of things much anymore. I also got lots of my ideas from the internet, where you will find an unlimited number of kids project websites. HPCC Kids committee calendar (flexible and not written in stone!): Fall: Harvest party: we have had apple tastings, craft activities, and made Halloween decorations for our homes. Tree planting kids activities: to entertain kids while their folks volunteer Halloween parade: at the fountain before trick or treating, with pizza and cider & a costume contest Spring activities: Spring party: we've had art activities, a spring flower planting to take home, and games. We've had relay races to win prize ribbons, including running, sack races, three-legged races, & wheelbarrow races. we've also had a performer in the past, our very own Mark Hayward, a professional yo-yo artist. Tree planting: last year, the kids ran a used book sale at St. Andrew's church and we donated the proceeds to Children's Hospital Summer activities: June: We've had a craft table at the Bryant St. festival July 4th bike decorating and parade: the kids bring their bikes up to the park and decorate them with lots of red/white/blue decorations. We then ride our vehicles around the fountain in different age groups for safety and have snacks and lemonade. August: Reservoir of Jazz: we have a kids tent, where we've done various art activities. We've also had a nature scavenger hunt, made plaster/sand mini-beaches, had relay races, & obstacle courses. Thank you in advance for helping to make our neighborhood a better place for our children! I just wanted to pass along the great news that after a long and complex process, on Feb 1, 2011, the City of Pittsburgh approved the expansion of the Environmental Charter School to the Park Place school building... Here is the official ruling from City Council: File number 2011-1262 Resolution approving a Conditional Use under the Pittsburgh Code, Title Nine, Zoning, Article V, Chapter 911 Section 911.04.A.64 to Park Place School Associates, owner, for authorization to use the existing three-story structure located at 309 South Braddock Ave. as an Elementary School with a maximum of 234 Students on property zoned R2-L, Residential Two-Unit, Low Density Districe, 14th Ward, Council District No. 9. For those of you that signed petitions, wrote letters or sent emails to City Council and just talked about this issue with your friends and neighbors, I thank you for your support! Many thanks to every one who sent advice about body shops (for cars, that is.) Here are the suggestions I received. Bonura and Sattler (412-361-8829) on Washington Boulevard and Iezzi's (412-361-7022) on Bryant St each received 7 recommendations. We used Bonura and Sattler and they did excellent work and were very, very nice in the bargain. They detected damage that another body shop missed and still came in a bit under our insurance estimate. Armstrong at 5470 Penn Ave (412-661-4958) and Mike's on Meadow Street each received 3 recommendations. Other recommended shops were: Kenny in an alleyway off Baum Blvd. Petraglia's on Liberty Ave past the Bloomfield Bridge (412-682-5430) C&R Collision on North Craig St (412-621-6905) Ask for Rocco Pittsburgh Collision on Butler Street across from the Fleming Bridge.
