Hi all, Oak wilt is beginning to have an affect on our urban forest, as 2 large stands of trees have been removed from Frick and Highland Parks. You may have noticed the removal in Frick--2 acres were removed at the end of Kensington and Reynolds. Once trees are infected, they need to be removed to keep the fungus from spreading. Anyway we are offering a free session about it on Saturday in Highland Park... come on down with your coffee and learn how the fungus is affecting our area and how it can be prevented and treated. *Oak Wilt in Pittsburgh: A Special Education Session* Oak Wilt is a fast-spreading fungus that is affecting oak trees in the Pittsburgh region. Once the fungus is discovered in a population of trees, they must be removed. A 2-acre stand of trees were removed from Frick Park this spring, and another large area of trees that are infected will be removed in Highland Park in late July/early August. What is Oak Wilt and what are treatment options? Will it affect trees in your neighborhood? Join us for a special session with the Department of Forestry, Friends of the Pittsburgh Urban Forest, and Steve Miller from Bartlett Tree Experts in Highland Park. See the area where trees were recently removed, and learn more about this aggressive fungus, how to prevent it, and how it is treated. Hi. I'm a professional photographer currently living in Friendship. My partner, is a professional designer/artist and we are very interested in living in Highland Park. I've been at the same place of residence for 11 years and even though there's craigslist, I have to admit that the moving scene is quite frustrating! What we are looking for is a 2+ bedroom with central air and hardwood floors in a decent neighborhood. We have the most well behaved white lab you will ever meet. She has been in my studio for 2 years and has never had an accident. Because of her, we'd also love a place with a little yard. We are good tenants and will respect your property. Greetings Neighbors... I hope that many of you had an opportunity to attend our First concert of the ROJ this past Sunday, it was a glorious day to kick back, relax and enjoy some of Pittsburgh Finest Jazz Musicians in our own "back yard". This week will be more of the same... The Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra, under the co-direction of Sean Jones and Mike Tomaro will be performing this Sunday August 8th, from 5-7pm. Bring your chair, blanket, picnic or you can just come hang and buys some delectable for Manno's or the "Ice Man". Thinking ahead? Sunday August 15th, 5-7- Kenia will be performing. For those of you who do not know Kenia you are in for a treat. Kenia sings beautifully and will take you on the trip of a life time to Brazil, with her Samba's, Bossa Nova's fused with Jazz. My efforts in composting have been pretty lame so I am giving it away. It's a cylindrical shape, in two pieces plus a lid, with a little door that slides open near the ground to pull out the finished composted material. [Highland Park] Recognition for Farmer's Market Cooperative of East Liberty

August 2nd through 8th is National Famers Market Week, as proclaimed by the US Department of Agriculture. Pennsylvania joined in the fun by declaring its own celebration of PA farmers markets. There are approximately 1,200 farmers markets in the state of Pennsylvania. Out of all of those markets, the state is recognizing two markets- one of them is our very own- the Famers' Market Cooperative of East Liberty. (Please see the text of the press release below.) The market will be visited this Saturday by a few officials from the state, including Deputy Secretary Mike Pechart. He will tour the market and make some comments at 9:30- this Saturday, August 7th. To celebrate the event, the farmers have declared it a "customer appreciation day" and will be providing a variety of free samples for our patrons. We will provide free iced coffee at the the Kew Park Coffee Bar. For those of us who have been patronizing the market for years, this recognition comes as no surprise. But we are gratified by the recognition. We also sincerely hope that this will attract new customers and patrons that will also come to know how special our market is. "Farmers markets are a great way to showcase agriculture across the state, especially in the cities, while ensuring all citizens have access to fresh, local food," said Kilgore. New this year, the market expanded to include produce for sale from Foundations Inc.'s "Seeds for Learning" initiative, an afterschool urban farm and entrepreneurship program based at the nearbyMartin Luther King High School. Agriculture Deputy Secretary Mike Pechart will tour the Farmers Market Cooperative of East Liberty inPittsburgh at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7. Owned by four agricultural businesses from Western Pennsylvania, the co-op is led by president James Kennedy of Butler County whose grandfather started going to the market in the 1920's and helped form the co-op in 1941. Kennedy's son, John, and daughter-in-law, Valerie, are the family's fourth generation to operate the market. The three other owner farms are Greenawalt Farm from Westmoreland County, Kistaco Farm of Armstrong County, and Zang's Greenhouse in Butler County. One city block long, the former horse stable turned market is open year-round on Saturdays from 5 a.m. to noon, honoring the FMNP vouchers. The Kennedys operate a meat case providing locally-grown and processed beef, pork, lamb and poultry. In addition to the four owners, at least five other vendors offer fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, dairy products, baked goods, teas and nursery plants.
