[Highland Park] Tree Service Reccomendations: How to Find a Certified Arborist

Dear Neighbors, When looking for a reliable tree service, I highly reccomend finding one using this site: http://www.isa-arbor.com/findArborist/findarborist.aspx It is extremely important for the health of your tree that you have it properly taken care of and pruned by a person who understands tree biology, growth, structure, and function, and who also has a deeper understanding of pests and diseases, some of which are taking a toll on our urban forests in the Eastern United States. (Perhaps you have heard of Oak Wilt, the Emerald Ash Borer, or the Asian Longhorned Beetle?) Arborists know to clean their pruning tools after working on each tree so that a fungus that may have been present in the last tree they worked on doesn't come to your neighborhood and damage your trees. I am more than glad to give the names of great, reliable, certified arborist tree companies my organization regularly works with, and I usually do each time someone posts a question about tree services. Friends of the Pittsburgh Urban Forest cannot do private property work, but we do hire contractors from time to time who do. For the health of your trees and of the trees throughout the city, I emplore you to hire a certified professional. hey all, we have a security door that we will be taking to construction junction if no one wants it. it is outside our house...1136 Winterton. It is black iron (some sort of metal). all the parts are there. it does need to be sanded in some parts and repainted but otherwise it is totally functional and solid. -- Cara

[Highland Park] Carnegie Lake

I walk my dog down to Carnegie Lake most every day. For those of you who do not know, this is the lake right next to the Highland Park swimming pool. Early in the spring, I noticed that there was an early appearance of algae bloom, and a heavy occurrence of string algae. In the last few weeks, I have noticed more garbage, such as dirty diapers, bags, bottles, etc. floating in the lake and being caught by the algae. What should be a beautiful park experience is now looking like the beginnings of a cesspool. Also, there is a notable lack of garbage cans, that if people were so inclined to use them, there are not there to use! I have been told to call 311 about this issue. If you share this experience, I encourage you to do likewise.

[Highland Park] homeowners inssurance

I had damage this winter because of the storm. My insurance company, Travelers, paid for it. Now they claim that they did not add a surcharge because of the claim, since it was a catastrophic situation. Yet my insurance premium went up quite a bit. I wonder what other people's experience has been, and do you have an insurance company you would recommend that did not raise rates. many thanks, Irina

[Highland Park] looking for home(s) for 2 kittens

We have been feeding a feral cat, and she had kittens 8 weeks ago. We are now looking to find homes for 2 kittens. We are in the process of working with animal rescue league to trap the feral cat and have her spayed so this doesn't happen again. The kittens are very cute. They have been living with us for the past week or so, and every day they become more affectionate. They have been around children since coming into our home, and we have been making it a point to handle each kitten several times a day. I'm thinking of switching to another company to manage my home security system, and I'm looking at ADT, Vector & Guardian. Has anybody had any experiences - good or bad - with any of the three companies? I'm especially interested in the question of length of contract, pricing, quickness of response, etc. Or is there another company that you really think is good and reasonably priced? thanks! -justine
