Thanks, neighbors, for the fantastic input about local produce deliveries! Several people asked me to post the poll results for various CSA programs that come to Highland Park. See below for the full write-up. My husband and I decided to go with Kretschmann Farm because they have the half-share option. Penn's Corners was the other highly-recommended program, but did not have the bi-weekly option. What could be better than local, fresh, organic produce? Erin CSA Info - http://pittsburgh.about.com/od/farm_markets/tp/csa_farms.htm - http://www.localharvest.org 1. Penn’s Corners Farm Alliance – IIIIIIII -8 - Longer season (early Spring box option) - Lots of variety including eggs, bread, cider, cheeses, sauces, honey, pastas, herbs - Allow for meat orders - “Amazing service, huge variety.” - Drop-off at Tazza on Wednesdays - Brochure describes great/useable items! - 24 weeks (Mid-June to Mid-Nov) for $590 - Run by 1 farm, pulls in items from other area farms - Monthly “farm-stand” to order what you want, including meats, etc. - Can order large meat quantities - Certified organic or naturally raised (all or most?) - More likely to surprise you with what you get - “Boxes are generous. Good variety.” - Large, and have to pack the boxes a day ahead of time resulting in poorer quality - Two people couldn’t eat everything we got - Better variety than Kretschmann 2. Kretschmann – IIIIIII-7 - Most quantity, including some eggs, breads, etc. - May customize your box to a small extent - Dirtier produce - So fresh it lasts surprisingly long - Farmers are great, easy to work with, flexible with payments, receptive to email, accommodating, communicative - Weekly newsletter with what to expect in your box and farm info - Can arrange for chicken and beef - “Not always happy with quality. Cherry Valley Organics – I - Pick and choose what you want 6. Dillner Farms – II - No Highland Park drop-off spot - Small box for $300 (22-weeks) 7. Family Ceramics Class *- Cost $250/pair, $360/family (up to 4 persons), $60/additional person - Wednesdays, April 14-June 2, 6:30-8:30pm * * Come explore your creative side with your children. In this class, parents and children will get their hands dirty together while learning some basic ceramic techniques. Students will learn hand-building and the potter's wheel, as well as decorating and glazing techniques to create fun and functional pots for your home. Instructor, Keith Hershberger, is a Highland Park resident, Union Project ceramic co-op member, and instructor at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild. * Squirt Clay Class *- Cost $95 - Mondays, Apr 12-May 17, 6-7pm* * Instructors: Rachel Sherman and Jenna Vanden Brink This class introduces clay as a medium to our youngest students (5-8 years old). They learn the basics of hand-building by using coil, pinch, slab, and sculpture methods to build both functional and sculptural pieces. Students will introduce color and texture to their artworks by exploring different decorating and finishing techniques. While working with clay, students' creative ideas will be encouraged by images of historic ceramic works and stories from modern children's literature. *Youth Ceramics Class *- Cost $95 - Saturdays, Apr 10-May 15, 9-11am Instructors: Joseph Delphia and Jenna Vanden Brink Students will construct both functional and decorative artwork using a variety of techniques. Each child will design, create, and decorate their own functional pots and learn how to throw on the potter's wheel. Because I know that there are a great many dog lovers in HP, I thought I'd pass this along. I wish I felt like we could take on a puppy right now, because this one pulls on my heart strings, but I don't think that we can. I am hoping, however, that someone here is in the mood for a puppy. The below e-mail is from our kennel/dog sitters. They are great dog trainers and understand large dogs (we have 2 half boxer/half american bulldogs who love it there). I trust that what they say about the dog dealing well with children and other dogs is true, they have both. He is 12 weeks old and he was attacked by another dog at 9 weeks old. He has healed well and is now looking for a forever home! If you are interested let me know and I will send pics! He is a pretty red nose pit his coat is red/liver color with a bit of white. He is doing great on potty training, he has learned sit down spin and twist. He is very social and like the girls alot!
