Reminder: The Kiwanis Club of East Liberty invites you to a celebration forum this Wednesday, June 10, 12:30-1:30 pm, at East Liberty Presbyterian Church (ELPC), Room 234. Hello Highland Park! We are so lucky to live so close to the only ZONED FARM LAND in the City of Pittsburgh! And it's an organic farm! BONUS! Co-Owners Randa and Barb are really excited to meet neighbors and teach about various farming practices. So, next Saturday June 13th they are having a tomato planting volunteer day from 9am - 3pm. Things you will learn: Tomato transplantingCompanion planting (marigolds, basil, herbs to attract beneficial insects)Efficient use of Irrigation systemsEffective mulching to conserve moistureDeer fencingStaking (not vampires) Mildred's Daughters Farm is a working CSA farm where members put in a number of hours each week in exchange for a full share of the crops. The CSA is full for 2009 but they are looking for new members for the future. If you are interested they would love to meet you! Come on out and check out the farm! You'll have fun and learn a lot! Saturday June 13th 9am - 3pm TOMATO PLANTING VOLUNTEER DAY 1100 Normahill, Stanton Heights (Click for a map!) Snacks provided, bring something to share if you like! "Why haven't they already planted their tomatoes?", you may be asking yourself? Well, on the hill, in full exposure, with a full wind coming from the river valley, it's colder there. To protect their crops of heirloom tomatoes, they wait until there are no frost reports for at least a week.

[Highland Park] Still excited about the Festival, but a little hungry

Hello again neighbors The Festival on Bryant Street was a lot of fun, but I guess we did not plan the food portion very well. We asked the local businesses to sell food, and some of them did, but we did not really ask what they were going to sell. The food was good, but ran short. We did not have all the traditional "festival" food. And we did not make sure there was "kid-friendly" food. As one of the organizers, I would like to hear some feedback about what we should and should not do in coming years with the Festival. What we did this year was put the word out, asking for participants from Highland Park (which spilled over into the East End) to sell arts and crafts. And we asked the local businesses if they would sell food. We then gave them a table and said "welcome". We did not really ask specifics on what they were selling (from the artists or food folks). So for next year, I know we need to ask and arrange for more food selection, even if we have to look outside the neighborhood. But I would still like to hear any feedback (positive or negative) about the entire Festival: time of day, length, kids activities, food, adult activities, artists, non-profit organizations, how the event was laid out, number of tables and chairs available, anything else you can think of. Should we do the Festival in conjunction with the Yard Sale again? There were many folks involved in pulling this Fesitval off, and I dont want to give the impression that I was in charge of this. Kelly Vitti, Ethan Winograd, Kevin Bivins, Doug Khorey, Nevena Staresinic, and Jana Finder and I met over several months to organize the Festival. There were many volunteers who helped set up and take down chairs and tables and clean up, and we appreciate that help. Lee Gross (who beautifully renovated the building in the 5800 block of Bryant) provided power for the stage and sound system. Food Glorious Food provided electricity and water for the Union Project to teach how to use a throwing wheel (I really should have asked Saeeda and John how to phrase this). Tambellinis brought out sausages and Park Bruge introduced themselves to the neighborhood. Folks seemed to be enjoying the weather, music, crafts, and hanging out on Bryant Street.
