[Highland Park] Pastoral Note: General Andrew Farley

Many may have seen in this morning's Post Gazette the obituary for General Andrew Farley. Andrew and Marta were long-time Highland Park neighbors who lived at Wellesley and Highland (in the house now owned by St. Andreans Rob Wozniak and Jana Iverson) and before they moved to Texas participated in many neighborhood and parish activites, including the Highland Park Community Club--and several years, both of them, as afterschool tutors in our Extraordinary Tutoring at St. Andrew's program . . . . We will remember Andrew in our prayers, and I know we will keep Marta and their children and grandchildren in our prayers as well. A Memorial Service is scheduled at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, May 30, at the First Lutheran Church, Grant Street, downtown. May he rest in peace and rise in glory. The Highland Park Community Council together with Pittsburgh Fulton School are bringing you the Bryant Street Festival, a celebration of Highland Park artists, performers and neighbors. Lots of children's activities scheduled including a moonwalk, skee ball, crafts, games and more. We have over a dozen local artists lined up selling handmade jewelry, notecards, ceramics and much more. Local vendors including Tambellini's and Smiling Banana Leaf are joining in to provide great food options. A Plus Schools, a local non-profit monitoring public education, reports several Pittsburgh Public Schools struggle to increase academic achievement. As the district begins to make decisions about under-populated schools; academic achievement has become a community priority. The part of the discussion that focuses on student achievement in these instances revolves around some poor statistics on grades, SAT and other standardized test scores; student retention and graduation rates in some of these schools. The District has implied that proposed and potential facility and curriculum changes would have a positive impact on these statistics. Meanwhile, two Southwestern PA charter schools -- City Charter High School and Propel School -- were among the top 21 charter schools honored in 2009 by New Leaders for New Schools, a nonprofit that focuses on school leadership. The schools' programs have infused technology and educational supports to provide an environment of success. Students at both schools have shown a dramatic increase in educational achievement, as measured by state test results in reading and math that factor the impact of a school on its students' achievement over time; and the progress students make from one year to the next, independent of proficiency targets. Hello Neighbors, My wife and I have lived in a rental house in Highland Park for two years, and are now looking to buy our own home. We have looked at homes that are currently listed for sale in the area, but I thought I'd send out an email in case there was anyone in the neighborhood who has been thinking about selling their house, but not gotten around to it. The main things we are looking for in a house are: - 3 bedrooms or so (we live in a massive house now and would like to downsize) - A garage, or room to build one - some sort of yard for our dog I'd really appreciate it if you would let me know if you, or anyone you know, is thinking about selling. [Highland Park] brick disposal?

I've recently been tearing down a wall in my backyard and unfortunately the bricks are splitting instead of coming apart in whole. Does anybody have any ideas for disposing of the bricks? The only think I can think of is to call 1-800-GOT-JUNK or renting a dumpster, but I wasnt sure if anybody know of a somebody that took brick fragments to reuse. There are some whole and half bricks, but a lot of shavings as well. Does any body have any suggestions? Thanks.
