[Highland Park] Sparky's surprising return

I want to thank those of you who contacted me about my missing cat, Sparky, even though the messages mostly reported sightings of wild geese. I was actually on the verge of adopting a gray-white kitten one neighbor had been sure was mine when Sparky returned by herself, trotting into the backyard one afternoon about a week and a half after disappearing, looking very emaciated, starved for affection and quite dirty--her white paws were a shade of gray lighter than the rest of her, and, after a few moments of joyful, hyper-ventilating affection, I realized my mouth and eyes were taking in quite a lot of grit. She got a bath she did not like at all and then some rare culinary treats prepared especially to her taste. She's been meowing more than she used to, but she's still too dumb to tell us anything about her adventure. To my relief, she's been staying quite close since her reappearance. I guess she's down at least to eight lives now. Thank you again for the messages of aid and interest, one of the nicest experiences in my 37 years in this fine neighborhood. Peter Gillespie

[Highland Park] Recycling center?

Hi everyone, My apartment complex doesn't pick up any recyclables so I have been driving mine to the East End Drop-Off Center (Hamilton Ave at N Dallas Ave). I've heard there are centers that offer cash back for soda cans. Does anyone know where one is? If I have to drop off my own recyclables I'd rather be getting some laundry money for it! :-) Thanks, Lyn

[Highland Park] Changes to neighborhood list

All, I made some changes to improve the way the list operates and to help reduce the spam the moderator has to wade through to find real posts to approve. The list will now discard spam that has been identified instead of holding it for approval. The list and associated addresses for requests and bounces now operate only as highlandparkpa.com and no longer highlandpark.pgh.pa.us. Please update your address books: Neighborhood(a)highlandparkpa.com Also, occasionally the virus scanner stops working, causing posts to be delayed unnecessarily as was the case with a timely message posted last week. I'll try to get that problem fixed soon as well. Lastly, I changed the web archives of the list to be accessible to list members only and with a password. Having the archives be searchable was good but many people were posting things they did not want to share with everyone on the planet. Keep in mind though when you post that you really don't know who the other thousand or so list members are (or whether they are really in the neighborhood). Bob continues to be your moderator. I'm just running things behind the scenes. Rudy

[Highland Park] Tai Chi at St. Andrew’s begins Sept 8 at 6:30 PM

If you have been thinking about joining the Tai Chi class at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Highland Park this is a great time to start. A ten-week course for both Second Level and Basic Level Tai Chi students begins at 6:30 PM on Monday, September 8th and runs through Monday, November 17th, skipping November 3rd for the St. Andrew’s All Saint’s Music Festival. Tai Chi, practiced by men and women of all ages, is an ancient Chinese system of exercise with slow and gentle motion that raises and balances the energy of the body leading to improved health and vitality. In addition Tai Chi can be a Martial Art or system of self-defense and a meditation in motion. Our instructor is Judy Crow who trained in the Yang style Long Form by Y.K. Chou and has taught Tai Chi for over twenty-five years in the Pittsburgh area. The fee for each 10-week course is $55.00 per person or two for $100. These 1 ½ hour classes are held at St. Andrew’s located at 5801 Hampton Street between N. Highland and N. Negley Avenues.
