Dear Neighbors, Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz School invites you to attend an information session for students interested in part-time graduate degrees on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at 10:00 AM. We offer masters degrees for working adults interested in the following areas of public, non-profit and information technology management: Public Management - Non Profit Management - Public Policy - Economic Development - Health Care Policy and Management - Higher Education Administration - Human Resources Management - K-12 Educational Leadership - Educational Technology Management - Information Technology Management - Information Security and Assurance - Software Design and Management This 2-hour information session will be held in Hamburg Hall (4800 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213) on the Carnegie Mellon campus in Oakland. Carnegie Mellon administrators will offer information on courses, financial aid, part-time student life, and the admissions process. Many, many thanks for all your recommendations of shoe repair people. Here is what I received. First I've included the copy of the list I was kindly sent by Anne-Marie. Then I've followed with individual recommendations below. Thanks again to all! Our shoes are being repaired even as I write this. jai ---From Anne-Marie Alderson: Pasted below is the email that went out about a year ago. Personally, I can vouch for Fox Chapel shoe repair. I took about 4 pairs of dress shoes there to get re-heeled a few months ago and they charged about $8/pair, and I was very satisfied with the outcomes- they even shined all my shoes for me. Palermo's on Butler St. "repairs shoes & purses" "VERY VERY reasonable and has been in business for decades. He salvaged my favorite sandals last year and charged me only 3 dollars." "HE DOES EVERYTHING TO DO WITH SHOES, HANDBAGS,BELTS ETC." "…sometimes slow about getting the job done but they do EXCELLENT work." For the record, I took my brother's hokey gloves there to be fixed a few years ago; seems they are the repair shop of choice for the Pens! "Don't know if he's still there, but there used to be a fellow in the teeny, tiny strip mall at the corner of College and Ellsworth in Shadyside. He worked out of the laundromat, which is definitely still there." Gabriel's Shoe Repair – Forbes Ave, downtown. "…he works wonders!" Best Made Shoes, Bloomfield on Liberty Avenue (opposite side of Liberty from the post office). "They sell Birkenstocks, orthotics and custom made shoes, but they repair anything…." ---From Bruce Robison: Squirrel Hill Shoe Repair, which is 2205 Murray Ave., several blocks below Forbes. ---From Marcie McGuire: Otto's Shoe Repair in Verona. ---From Marsha: Best shoe repair man is on Butler street. Can't think of his name but he is about a mile on the left going toward downtown once you pass the gas station and custard stand on Butler street. ---From Julie McCracken: I took shoes to the dry cleaner in Point Breeze (can't remember the name) & they have a guy who picks up shoes to repair once a week. He did a great job, was reasonably priced, & even called me first to discuss the price before fixing them. ---From Martha Riecks: I have used a shoe repair shop downtown for simple repairs and they did a nice job. I do not know the name. They are located right by my office and are very nice - the shop's on Liberty Avenue between fifth avenue and sixth street, next door to Ritz Camera (they used to be located on Sixth Street, next to the Starbucks at Sixth and Penn). ---From Jessica Miller: The shoe repair place I love is in Fox Chapel/Aspinwall. Actually the name is alluding me right now but if you know where the Community Market is on Freeport, it is in that shopping center, next to Loafer's sandwich shop. ---From Theo Towns-Phiri: I wouldn't take my cowboy boots (or any other fot gear) anywhere but Ulrich's on 6th Ave across from Heinz Hall; they do it all, and all well. ---From Michael Sciarretti: The best and oldest in town is Ulrich... The do the ballet, Heinz Hall, BenCenter, custom dye etc...

*Feature Item of the Week: COMMUNITY DAY VENDORS – CALLING ALL VENDORS, June 1st * We are very excited to announce that we are now taking vendor applications for the Community Day Vendor Fair, June 1st. This event is held in partnership with the Highland Park Yard Sale. This yard sale is not your average- there are detailed maps describing all that is available at each home and it attracts around 500-1000 people, depending on the weather. Because we had such a great response last year, we will be expanding the sale to inside as well. We will be providing breakfast/lunch specials, crafts to keep the kiddies happy, music and space for 50 craft vendors. [Highland Park] Free Tennis Clinics at the Highland Park Tennis Courts on Stanton Ave.

Dear Highland Park Residents, As we have for a number of years, the Highland Park Tennis Club--HPTC (a non-profit organization) is giving free tennis lessons at the tennis courts on Stanton Ave. The lessons were to begin on May 3rd, but due to inclement weather were canceled for the first 2 weeks. With any luck from the rain gods, the lessons will be held each Saturday morning from 9:30 to 11 and run through July 19th. The lessons are for those of any age and ability. There is no need to sign up in advance, but if you are a first time participant it may be wise to be a little early so that we can sign you up and put you in an appropriate group. You needn't come every week, but if you do it will help your game. No racket is required--we have loaners. Hope to see you there. Questions? Neighbors - Yet again we are scheduled to meet tomorrow evening for our monthly Highland Park Community Council Meeting. We shall start with a Board Meeting at 7:00 PM (ish) in the meeting room at St. Andrews on Hampton Street, dealing with our current projects, as well as a financial report. At 7:30 PM (ish) we have two short topics as follows: 1) Non-native invasive plants invading the neighborhood, as well as how to deal with them 2) A brief presentation on Kiwanis, with Highland Park resident Susy Robison, President of the East Liberty Kiwanis Club, and Al Mann, Secretary.
