[Highland Park] need help with stolen items

Dear neighbors, This morning we discovered that some boxes intended for storage were stolen out of our car (odd, because the car was locked and there's no sign of entry and the alarm didn't go off). The stolen items have virtually no monetary value but they were of significant value to us. One smallish box held my husband's photos and slides; another larger one held some artwork done by my sister. Boxes are likely labelled "Frank" or "Sue" on the outside. I'm assuming the thieves will just throw these away, so if anyone has seen them please let us know - 412 512 9151 or 412 363-7977. Thanks so much, Sue

I'm in the market for a late model car to get me around, preferably in the under $6000 range. I have been burned by a dealer (North Hills Auto Mall--avoid them like the plague) and was considering going to CarMax in DC (while visiting my folks) until I read some pretty bad reviews on Ripoff reviews (a consumer website.) Can anyone recommend a car dealership that they know is reputable? I really want to work with a dealership b/c I can't in good conscience sell the car I have, I want to trade it in so it goes back into the auction system where it belongs. (April 24th, 2008) In celebration of Pittsburgh¹s 250th anniversary, actors and theatrical lighting will bring the acclaimed murals of Maxo Vanka to life in the play ³GIFT TO AMERICA,² which will run at 8:30 p.m., Wednesday May 7 through Saturday May 10 at St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in nearby Millvale. The play is written, acted, directed, lit and otherwise supported by residents of Highland Park & by faculty and alumni of Carnegie Mellon¹s College of Fine Arts. The one-hour play is a conversation about the murals among Vanka and Father Albert Zagar, the priest who commissioned the murals, and two female characters. The dramatic reading, which will be accompanied by Tamburitzan music, is scripted by Carnegie Mellon University Professor Emeritus of English David Demarest, and was originally staged in 1981. Described by Time magazine as ³one of the few distinguished sets of murals in the U.S.,² the murals depict the ravages of war and the sacrifices of immigrant workers in early 20th century industrial America. They also honor the congregation¹s Croatian heritage and Christian faith. Vanka had recently immigrated when he began to paint the murals in 1937, and called them his ³gift to America.² The vivid imagery depicted on the walls and ceilings of the Millvale church reveal a passion that is universal and uniquely Croatian. After seeing the murals, Talking Heads rock musician David Byrne of the group The Talking Heads called Vanka ³the Diego Rivera of Pittsburgh.² The Society to Preserve The Millvale Murals of Maxo Vanka is staging the play, and hopes to raise greater awareness of the paintings. The performance will launch a campaign to fund the illumination, restoration and preservation of the murals. Tickets are $10 and will be available before performances at the church, which is in Millvale off of Route 28 (you can see the yellow church building & the ³Gift To America² sign from the highway). Hello All, The following press release was sent by the Mayor's office and sounds interesting for anyone who likes trees and clean air. Bob PRESS RELEASE MAYOR WRAPS UP EARTH WEEK CELEBRATION WITH FREE TREE GIVE-AWAY (PITTSBURGH) April 23 -- Mayor Ravenstahl announced today that on Monday, April 28, he will partner with Giant Eagle and Friends of the Pittsburgh Urban Forest (FPUF) to hand out 1,000 free Frazier fir tree seedlings. Residents are encouraged to attend the "Great Tree Giveaway" held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Construction Junction, one of the City's recycling drop-off centers, at 214 N. Lexington Street in Point Breeze. Residents may obtain up to 10 free trees, and may drop-off any recyclable item, in particular, unused phone books. "I encourage all residents who haven't already planted a tree to make Monday the day they unearth ground in their communities," Mayor Ravenstahl said. "Whether it's digging dirt in your very own yard, or recycling an unused phone book, let's enhance our quality of life now and for future generations." The seedlings, donated by Giant Eagle and Kraft Foods, are ideal yard trees and easy to plant and maintain. "Through the great work of Treevitalize Pittsburgh, and generous donations from the private sector community, more trees are being planted in our City than ever before," Mayor Ravenstahl said. Green education materials, including a comprehensive analysis indicating the importance of trees to the City's infrastructure, as well as information on the City's new recycling initiatives, will also be distributed at the give-away. "It is our goal to educate citizens on how important trees are to the environment, and to the health of our City's infrastructure," said Danielle Crumrine, executive director for FPUF. "Citizens will leave with educational information that will show in dollars and cents the value we receive by doing our part to plant just one tree."
