- www.unionproject.org - Attention East End Community Leaders Union Project would like to invite you to a community discussion. Through personal connections and news reports, we are increasingly aware of issues around violence and public safety in the East End. Violence perpetrated by youth is one of the main concerns. We are also increasingly aware of many proactive solution-oriented efforts among grassroots community groups, the new Mayor, Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent and local Police. Our hope is that you will come with ideas, suggestions and guidance for the Union Project, our elected officials and each other about what new efforts can be made to help avert future muggings, robberies, assaults, etc. Most importantly – come to the discussion to help think about how we can collectively cultivate hope, opportunity and investment among neighborhood youth! PUMP Hosts Social Enterprise Brown Bag Forum In today's current economic climate, nonprofit organizations must learn to diversify their streams of income in order to survive. Social enterprise is a way for nonprofits to not only develop these revenue streams, but also keep their programming fresh and creative. Come on Thursday, March 23, Noon - 1 PM in the A.E. Hunt Room, Regional Enterprise Tower, 23rd Floor (Downtown) for a special brown bag forum to hear from an expert panel about their successful social enterprises. [Highland Park] dead kittty

Hi, all: My husband and I returned from a week away to find an orange striped cat (who often hangs around by our garage) dead by the trash cans behind our apartment. I am not sure who owns this kitty. We live on Callowhill between Negley and Mellon and I suspect the cat is from close by. It's not clear why he died. We are going to call animal control, I guess, to have him removed. If anyone knows the owner (or is the owner), please contact us if you would prefer to take him yourself. There is no need to sound so self-rightous. While it is true that racism abounds, it is clear that arrogance is alive and well too. We are all adults and not one of us is going to call the police just because someone is walking down the street. Have some respect for your neighbors. I have most definitely called the police when I saw an elderly woman walking down my street seemingly disoriented and I could not communicate with her. I would characterize that as looking out for others. People can, should and will use their best judgement when deciding whether or not to report suspicious activity - regardless of the persons race or attire; your charges of racism notwithstanding. Denise There is an older woman who walks up and down Jackson Street near my home. Sometimes she stands on a corner for several minutes, looking around. Should I report her? Or not unless she happens to be a person of color and wearing a hoodie? Please, friends, let's be vigilant but not vigalantees! Trying to enter a door on a front porch or walking up someone's driveway and scoping out the garage is suspicious -- absolutely. Walking up and down the street, talking on a cell phone may simply be a neighbor looking for fresh air and a quiet or confidential place to talk to a friend. --dan

My partner also saw two strangers wandering up and down our street last week. It was Sat. morning around 10am. They went up and down Jackson St for 15 minutes and then walked down Heberton. Both were African-American, black hood, one in 20s and one in 30s, one big and one small and skinny. One was talking the entire time on a cell phone.
