[Highland Park] Weekly Walks in the Woods

This evening I participated in the Weekly Walk in the Woods sponsored by Venture Outdoors (formerly Western Pennsylvania Field Institute) and the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy. We walked for about 2 hours total (including a walk around the reservoir at the end), identifying plants, park features, and history as we went. After the walk, some of those who participated ended up at Enrico's Tazza d'Oro. Every third Wednesday during the summer the walk starts in Highland Park at the North Highland Avenue entrance at 6:30 pm. The walk is free, worthwhile, and not too difficult--there are some steep steps and some mud, but most of it is pretty easy. There are walks in the other City parks as well--one each week. In months which have 5 weeks, a walk is scheduled at Washington's Landing on that last Wednesday of the month. I received many requests for the summary of roofer recommendations, which I am very happy to share. But I have also received many requests for other tradespersons, such as painters and electricians. Does anyone know any pianists? My Volunteer Singing group needs an accompanist. We are a friendship-based social group who rehearses and performs for the teamwork, camaraderie and joy of music, not for money. We are a small semi-professional choral group, who sings in nursing homes, shelters, etc. I can offer free training in sight-singing for anyone interested. A small stipend may be possible for the accompanist on occasion, but for tax, copyright, and ideology reasons, we prefer a volunteer. A forwarded message from our Shadyside friends that Highland Park residents might want to be aware of - -------------Hi all, Wanted to make everyone aware that the scams we normally associate with the "Gypsies" are starting up again. State Police have advised us that these criminals & con artists are operating in our area. I've seen several reports already of suspects coming to homes claiming to be from a utility service wanting into your home. Once in, they steal what ever they can get! Point Breeze was the latest hit. A White Male, 55Y/o 155, Short Grey/Black hair, stated he was from the water department and was there to give the victim a $35 rebate towards her bill. The suspect displayed some type of badge and followed the victim into the house. Once inside the actor told the victim to go into the bathroom and flush the toilet. When the victim left for the bathroom, the suspect grabbed money and items left out and fled the scene. A similar incident occurred in Blookline. Please, do not let anyone into your home that you don't know. These people typically target the elderly, but this could happen to anyone. There should be no reason why a utility company has to enter your home. Beware of strangers with offers of money or free stuff, and if this happens to you, please call 911 immediately!!!! Thank you! Neighbors, We're hard at work getting ready to build a garden oasis for NatureLAB behind Food Glorious Food. I've attached the announcement below. We are hoping to have more volunteers from the neighborhood. Your skills can be used no matter what level. We do need some specific skills/items: 1. a carpenter to build the frames for the raised beds and to build several trellises. 2. a prune 3. someone with an eye for landscaping 4. tools (loaned or donated) and 5. plants if you have extras Come spend the day with us, or spend an hour. [Highland Park] A busy time for the Neighborhood list

This week we had a flurry of new messages on the list, focused on two main subjects: apartment/house rentals (4 messages), and contractors/services (6). There are, in fact, several more messages in the queue, and I'll send them out right after I send this one... We seem to have an opportunity now (and sufficient interest) to update the HPCC contractors list and possibly publish it on the Highland Park web site; I do not have the time to do this myself, but I can help. It would be nice to get Ollie Rielly (publisher of the HPCC newsletter, where previous lists have been published) and perhaps Mary Louise Ray (who volunteered!) together to coordinate this effort. I would like to point out a couple of guidelines for sending mail to the Neighborhood list--the sole purpose of these guidelines is to maintain the high quality the list has achieved so far: - Please send each message with its own descriptive subject and no quoted text from another message unless the message is a reply; if it is a reply, keep the quoted portion to a minimum. - Keep in mind that the list is meant to be used for announcements, and not for discussions--there are many list members who value the perceived lack of "junk" on the list; to some, lengthy discussions or "me too" messages are junk. If there is a need for a discussion list, we can create one. I've asked about this before, and there was apparently no interest. - If you send a message asking for something or announcing an event, please consider sending a follow-up message afterward letting folks know what you learned or how the event went. - Please send only plain-text messages without attachments; if you want to send an attachment, please send email to me first about it. - Also, keep in mind that the list is moderated, meaning that messages must be approved before they'll go out to everyone. Sometimes messages won't go out right away, and sometimes they won't go out at all--that's life on a volunteer basis :-) Right now I'm the only moderator, but soon I would like to allow others to help with this role. I have summarized the responses (minus the responders' personal information); if you are interested in reading the recommendations, please contact me and I will email the .pdf file to you. May I also suggest that others who have posted similar queries (for painters, electricians, etc.) do the same? Or, if you like, you can forward them to me and I can make a .pdf of them (again, minus the personal information) and make them available to anyone who is interested. I think I read not too long ago that someone is making a directory of such information, perhaps they may be able to use this info, as well. I hope I am not stepping on any toes by compiling and disseminating this information. [Highland Park] Roofer recommendations

We've used Vlad Prudchenko 412-445-8254, 412-799-0406 I don't know of his expertise, but he built a new garage roof for us and had the most reasonable price. He's a very nice man and quite meticulous in his work, although a bit slow, but I think that is due to his taking a lot of care. Sherry Goldman 412-xxx-xxxx
