[Highland Park] Smashed Car Windows on Stanton
Hello, neighbors This morning, between 6:30 & 7:20 a.m., perhaps as many as 15-20 cars had a window smashed out on Stanton between Highland & the tennis courts near the park entrance, with the heaviest concentration between Highland & the bend in the street. I called 911 around 7:30. The dispatcher initially said the owners would have to report it, but since there were so many, she said she would send someone to see if the guilty party(s) were still around. Not every single car was hit - sometimes it was the driver window, sometimes the back, at least once the rear window (in an SUV). The SUV still had things in the back that weren't taken, so I don't know if theft was the motive. Because I didn't notice anything when I was driving down from the tennis courts toward Highland around 6:30, but only on the way back, I think it happened this morning rather than last night, though I can't be sure. Just wanted to alert you about this. At about 9 a.m. this morning I was driving on the Penn Circle down by the corner of Centre Ave. (near Whole Foods) and there was a car with front and back driver's-side windows smashed. A police car was there, along with apparently the owner of the damaged car. About two years ago our car, and a number of others, was damaged in the same way while parked in the 900 block of N. Euclid, and last summer a whole row of cars had windows smashed on N. St. Clair by the tennis courts. It seems to be a recurrent form of urban vandalism, perhaps of the same genre as mailbox-tipping in more rural places . . . . Bruce Robison
Afternoon Highland Park Community, This morning about 0730, I met with several Highland Park residents who had been victimized and their cars vandalized. Based on information gathered, a vehicle was heard driving around the area about 0430 in the morning, followed by the sound of glass breaking. The occupants used a bb gun to shoot out car windows on Stanton, Heberton and Jackson. To address the vandalism and take a proactive stance to prevent additional vandalism, I am "cc-ing" the supervisors assigned to Zone 5 with the instructions to have the sector vehicles perform directed patrols in Highland Park. Translation: the uniformed patrol officers assigned to Highland Park will answer all 911 calls from Highland Park and immediately return to Highland Park upon the completion of a service call. I will also hire overtime to set up plainclothes surveillance in the area. Additionally, I will notify our Intelligence Squad and Crime Analysis Unit so that we can utilize every resource in our efforts to identify the culprits. If you have any information, observed any unusual activity or were a victim, please dial 911. I genuinely appreciate your cooperation and involvement in making the Highland Park Community a safer place to live. Cmdr RaShall M.
