[Highland Park] "Fundraising" Boys
I wonder how widespread this is. My teenaged daughter gave money to boys who were doing this on Forbes and Murray yesterday in th elate afternoon. From her description, it sounds like perhaps even the same kids. Their story was a mixed bag of raising funds for the Boys Club for football uniforms, that they had lost (perhaps they had run out of Yoga DVDs). Either these kids get around, or more distressingly, waves of such young men are working us in many different neighborhoods. Yesterday was a day off from public schools, so I guess they were keeping busy in their spare time! Tim Murphy CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE. In the mid-90's, I worked as an advocate for boys who were in and out of psychiatric care, in and out of Shuman, in and out of school. One of the boys used to buy boxes of generic "fund raising" candy bars from Sam's Club, then head downtown. This was all organized by a man in his neighborhood. He would drive several boys downtown, then split the profit with them. The thing I liked best about the whole thing was that they would say they were raising money for "the youths of Manchester." Truth in advertising! Hello everyone, I was away from the office last week so my response to the "fund raising and window breaking" incidents are delayed. So sorry, but my blackberry isn't as functional as my desktop. Fund raising: Dan is absolutely correct, a similar scam occurred in the 90's. We were able to successfully prosecute the scammer who claimed to be part of a youth group called "Boys to Men." If these young men are selling DVDs, CDs or any items door-to-door, they should be accompanied by an adult and have a permit to solicit. These young men are being exploited and are typically paid 5.00 dollars a day to promote their products. Please dial 911 to report the incidents and give a good description and direction of travel. Broken windows: I will once again institute an overtime detail to assist in determining the culprits. If anyone noticed anything suspicious...I have the red car email, please notify me via email or phone. The non-emergency number for Zone 5 is 412-665-3605, however the call must still be routed through 911. I will contact the 911 system in an attempt to facilitate responsiveness to Highland Park's non-emergency calls. Have a safe week. Cmdr. RaShall M. If you want to discourage dishonest scammers, institute and stick to the following policy: Do not under any circumstances give any person money that comes to your door unless it is a friend or relative that you know. This can be difficult when you see those sweet angelic faces asking to help buy uniforms for their struggling team or save the children of our city from some horrible plight. Dishonest people know this. However, if you are strong and consistent and tell everyone that you make it a policy to never give door to door but they are welcome to leave written material for you to consider mailing a donation, hustlers will soon learn that our neighborhood is not fertile ground for the dishonest. Have you noticed since 9/11 how many people walk through traffic asking for donations? Do you realize most of these people are keeping the money for themselves? NEVER GIVE DOOR TO DOOR OR FROM YOUR CAR IF YOU WANT TO DISCOURAGE THESE PRACTICES. You can always contact schools or youth clubs, churches, etc. on your own to verify whether or not the request is legitimate if you really want to make a donation to an organization and not a dishonest individual.
