If you want to discourage dishonest scammers, institute and stick to the following policy: Do not under any circumstances give any person money that comes to your door unless it is a friend or relative that you know. This can be difficult when you see those sweet angelic faces asking to help buy uniforms for their struggling team or save the children of our city from some horrible plight. Dishonest people know this. However, if you are strong and consistent and tell everyone that you make it a policy to never give door to door but they are welcome to leave written material for you to consider mailing a donation, hustlers will soon learn that our neighborhood is not fertile ground for the dishonest. Have you noticed since 9/11 how many people walk through traffic asking for donations? Do you realize most of these people are keeping the money for themselves? NEVER GIVE DOOR TO DOOR OR FROM YOUR CAR IF YOU WANT TO DISCOURAGE THESE PRACTICES. You can always contact schools or youth clubs, churches, etc. on your own to verify whether or not the request is legitimate if you really want to make a donation to an organization and not a dishonest individual.
