[Highland Park] voting registration
Neighbors - I know that that a decision is about to be made concerning PA's voter id law - but a colleague at work shared this link and I wanted to share it with you all. I nearly had a coronary the first time I inputted my information to make sure I was registered; following the form's instructions, I put in my full middle name. No dice - it said I was not listed in the registry. (Ack!) When I tried again and just used my middle initial, it verified my registration. https://www.pavoterservices.state.pa.us/Pages/VoterRegistrationStatus.aspx In short, it's a good thing to double check - but beware the idiosyncratic fillable form. Helen, The story of your middle name / initial mixup made me wonder how exact the new law demands that ID conform to your registered name. For those wondering the same thing, there does seem to be a degree of latitude and discretion allowed. Lets hope all of the poll workers have been versed on this. See attached for details. Hello Highland Park, Yesterday, an injunction was placed in effect so that no ID is required for voting in the Pennsylvania November 2012 election. There is still a muddy mix of information out there, but it appears, looking closely at the judge's ruling, that poll workers can ask to see your ID, but you must be allowed to vote on a regular ballot even if you do not have a valid ID. At this moment, it appears that the Voter ID law will be in full force for the Primary election in 2013. That is why poll workers may still ask you about your ID- as a way to prep for next year. BUT, it is very possible that there will be a mix of information flying around and it is also possible that an appeal of the recent decision may get filed, so keep a "head's up" on this issue. The Pittsburgh ACLU is possibly the best source for the most accurate info about Voter ID, however, I am also willing to answer questions and help out in any way I can. Remember- you must be registered to vote by October 9th to vote in the November election! -- Thomas C.
