[Highland Park] [Update.unionproject] call for perennial plants, community celebration, hard hat tour, mosaic classes
Union Project Update www.unionproject.org Bring a plant to Union Project on June 26 Persephone Project founder/director and UP resident artist Stephanie Flom is creating a Magic Penny Garden, a public artwork on the corner of Stanton and Negley Avenues. The garden is being designed by Stephanie along with ten community collaborators and will be comprised of plants shared by community members. The shared plants are those that have been given to the gardener and hold special meaning because of the significance of the narrative they hold. Please bring a perennial plant from your garden to the Union Project on Sunday, June 26 between 1 and 4 pm to help create the Magic Penny Garden. Join Stephanie and other community volunteers on three Saturdays in July from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help plant the garden. The Persephone Project is a community conceptual art project that promotes gardening as contemporary art and recognizes gardeners as artists. (persephoneproject.org) For more information about the Union Project's Magic Penny Sharing Day e-mail Stephanie at sflom@andrew.cmu.edu. Summer Market in full swing The Union Project will be hosting an outdoor neighborhood celebration on Thursday, July 7 from 6-8:30 pm. The Celebration will be an extension of the Union Project’s weekly Artist and Farmer’s Market, which take place every Thursday from 4 pm to 7 pm in front of the Union Project. The neighborhood celebration will feature free Face Painting and Games, Free Kid's Art Activities, BBQ Sandwiches, corn on the cob and more. Radio Hip Hop’s DJ Big John Stud will provide music. Plan to come early to buy locally grown produce and handmade crafts and stay late to join the Union Project in a summer celebration. On Friday, July 22 from 6 to 9 p.m., visitors will have an opportunity take a behind-the-scenes tour of The Union Project as construction as the first phase nears completion. Tours will highlight the temporary stained glass studios, where dozens of area residents have learned to restore stained glass, using the heavily damaged windows from the church as their class materials. More than 65 of the original windows have already been completed, and more than 20 will be installed and on display when the building reopens. Visitors will also tour the former Sunday school wing, the focus of the Phase One Restoration, now recast as office space for area nonprofits and studios for artists. Barrett Black will perform in the main sanctuary. A DJ will also provide music. Interactive exhibits will encourage visitors to explore the history of the church and to leave a record of their memories of the building and the neighborhood. The evening will not only honor a rich history, it will celebrate a vibrant future. The $30 ticket includes admission, drinks, hors d’oeuvres, desserts and a souvenir hard hat. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit www.unionproject.org, call 412/363-4550, or email hilary@unionproject.org. Tickets will also be available at the door the evening of the event. Create Mosaic Furniture at Union Project! Students enrolled in this class will learn how to create their own glass mosaic furniture. Students will have the choice of working on tabletops that will remain at Union Project for use in Union Station café or students can provide their own furniture to mosaic. All other class materials and tools will be provided. Tools will remain the property of Union Project but will be available for use during class sessions. Cost for this class will be $100 per student. Classes will take place on Saturday mornings from 9 am to 12 pm beginning September 17 thru October 22. Pittsburgh mosaic artist Lauren Blair will be the class instructor. Deadline to register is September 10. Please contact Justin@unionproject.org or call 412-478-3104 with questions. Glass Restoration and Team Building @ Union Project Do you want to build relationships with your co-workers, staff, or employees? Union Project is expanding its revolutionary stained glass restoration classes to the broader Pittsburgh business community. We would like to work with your business or organization to provide a valuable service in relationship and team building, while at the same time promoting volunteerism and service to the community. Union Project will host your group of between 4 and 12 individuals for half-day, full-day, or weekend long workshops concentrating on team building and the importance of good working relationships. Your group will assist in and/or complete the full restoration of a historic stained glass window that will be permanently reinstalled into the Union Project. Union Project staff skilled in leadership initiatives will lead the team building portion of the classes. Catherine Berard of Prism Stained Glass is the primary instructor for stained glass portion of the classes. Cost for each workshop is determined by the number of participants in each workshop. Union Project will work with your group to determine the workshop cost. Now accepting applications for rental partners Union Project is now accepting rental applications for use of studio, office, venue, and board meeting spaces at the Union Project. Only 2 offices are still available for yearly lease. Rental agreements can begin as early as September 1, 2005. In addition, there are 3 separate common areas that are available for use as worship space, performance space, board meeting space, weddings, and other civic gathering opportunities. Visit www.unionproject.org for more details, or email jess@unionproject.org or call 412-363-4550 for more information. Call for local potters Union Project is requesting support from local ceramic artists in making Union Station Café a vibrant and successful coffee shop and to reflect the value of community support even in the dinnerware that is used to serve our customers. If you are a ceramic artist and would consider contributing 10 handmade ceramic mugs or cups for us to use in Union Station your in-kind contribution of dinnerware to the Union Project is fully tax-deductible. We plan to use your gift of functional ceramic art in Union Station. Customers will eat and drink out of your pieces on a daily basis. Additionally, customers will have the opportunity to purchase the dinnerware they are eating off of (or similar clean pieces). If you are a ceramic artist and would like to assist the Union Project in this way please contact Justin@unionproject.org or call 412-478-3105. _______________________________________________ update mailing list update@unionproject.org http://unionproject.mennonite.net/mailman/listinfo/update.unionproject
