[Highland Park] fruit flies
Here is a simple way to get rid of fruit flies: * Roll a business card into a cone with a small hole at the bottom and tape it like that. Tape it to hold the cone shape. The hole has to be big enough for flies to get through, but not much bigger. * Put a mix of honey, vinegar and a little red wine in the bottom of a small narrow-mouth bottle. Liquor stores sell single-serving bottles that work well. Contrary to popular wisdom, flies love vinegar just as much as they do honey. * Plug the business card cone in the top of the bottle, narrow side down. A little tape will hold it in place. Place it out of sight on the counter where you have flies. Fruit flies will crawl down the cone to get the bait, but cannot get back out again. When it is full or the fly problem is over, take out the cone, cap the bottle and throw it away. Put it in the freezer for a bit to make sure that nothing escapes while you cap it. We bring these out whenever the little flies appear and it works like a charm. cheers, Tim Feinstein
