[Highland Park] Farmers' Market Cooperative of East Liberty
Hello Neighbors, Thanks to many of you who sent great comments and suggestions for our new web site. We will continue to tweak it. Eventually, the web site will be the best source for information and updates on the market. I have a few updates for this week. As we are approaching the winter months, fresh local fruit is becoming harder to come by. There are some exceptions to this, like the fresh, locally grown apples that are still available from the Kistaco Farm stand. And of course Kistaco will continue to press fresh cider all winter long. As I have been talking to olive farmers in California, I began to talk to farmers that grow fruit and dry it for the winter months. I have become particularly enamored with the Van Dyke farm in Gilroy, California. Peter Van Dyke is one of the family members that owns the farm. He takes great pride in growing the best tasting organic fruit available anywhere. It was recently featured in Saveur food magazine. The farm grows a variety of fruit including apricots, plums, pears and cherries. But the organic Blenheim apricots are clearly their claim to fame. They are sweet and chewy with a balance of tartness and firm texture. The apricots are sun-dried, sliced in half by hand then laid out on shallow trays to cure under the warm Gilroy sky. Apricots are high in vitamins A (beta-carotene) and C, and a good source of potassium. Check out their website. http://vandykeorganics.com/index.html I will have dried organic apricots and plums available at the market starting this Saturday. Another note is that Val Kennedy from the Kennedy Family Meat Stand wants me to remind everyone to get in their holiday meat orders as soon as possible. The market will be open to pick up orders (and of course other items) on Friday 12/24 from 5-11am, and 12/31 from 5-11am. Please stop by the stand on Saturday or call out to the farm. They take orders 9am-9pm Monday - Thursday, and 9am-6pm on Fridays. The number is 724-898-2316. The meat specials for this Saturday are Cornish hens and pork tendertoins. Please check out our new website. Please let me know if you have any suggestions on how to make the site better. http://www.farmersmarketcooperativeofeastliberty.com/ Thank you for supporting local farmers and the Farmers' Market Cooperative of East Liberty. Please stop by the market this Saturday.
