Hi Neighbors - I am the treasurer of Engineers without Borders Pittsburgh Professional Chapter. We have been making a lot of progress on our water delivery and distribution project in Curingue, Ecuador and we could use your help completing the next phase of construction. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by the end of the year so that we can buy the required materials for the stainless steel piping and pump system to bring water up the mountain (over 1000’ of elevation change). The people of Curingue are a hardworking, poor indigenous population, and while they don’t have much, they deserve clean water. When we started this project there were over 200 people living in Curingue; now there are only about 150 – people keep leaving because the water there is so bad. They travel up and down the steep mountain to fetch buckets of water from a bacteria ridden stream that is often dried up. EWB-Pittsburgh has designed a collection, conveyance, and storage system to bring water to the community from a clean spring with plenty of flow. We have already completed construction of the water intakes, pump houses, pump stations, and the storage tank – the next task is to complete the piping between the pump stations. This water system will bring people back to the community, we know because we’ve done it before 5 years ago in the neighboring community of Tingo. The community of Tingo has benefited in ways we never thought possible, they built fish ponds, a guest house, and a cultural museum. They even host visiting tourists and archaeologists.
