The Highland Park garden located at the Highland Park Bridge is in desperate need of volunteers to assist in the planting/mulching/and maintenance. The Western Pennsylvania Parks Conservancy spearheaded this project years ago and is having a very difficult time finding people who are willing to assist in maintaining this beautiful garden. Yes, the location is somewhat difficult to get to and the amount of space it covers makes it one of the more time consuming gardens to work on, but, it is a reflection of our neighborhood and one of the first impressions visitors receive when traveling from across the Allegheny River and from Allegheny River Boulevard. It is an asset to the neighborhood. Simply stated, the following is needed: 1) At least 25 Highland Park residents to assist in planting flowers and spreading mulch on a date "to be determined" in May 2) Individuals and/or landscapers/grass mowers who would be able to take responsibility for mowing the grass at the garden one day in June, July, August, September (each month could be covered by different individuals) *** There is a small stipend available for this task AND the opportunity for a business owner to be named on the West. PA Parks Conservancy recognition board at the site!! **** A call for volunteers from the neighborhood went out last year by the Conservancy and I was the only one to show up :-) It was a lot of work and disappointing to see people from outside the neighborhood working so hard on a Highland Park garden. If we could gather just 25 more people, this task would not be so daunting. It is also a great way to get outside and enjoy the spring weather and you will feel good about the difference you made each time you travel across the bridge! A representative will be at the March 15th Highland Park Community Council meeting at St. Andrew's Church on Hampton Street at 7:30pm to address the specifics and - hopefully - gather some volunteers. Please make time for the meeting and/or email me if you may be able to help. THANK YOU!
