Thanks Susy Robison 412.562.0154 The Homeless Children’s Education Fund is a nonprofit agency whose mission is to “ensure that homeless children have equal access to the same educational opportunities and experiences as their peers.” HCEF partners with 17 homeless shelters and transitional housing facilities throughout Allegheny County to provide educational resources and programs for homeless youth. HCEF is seeking part-time Reading Tutors to work in homeless shelters in Braddock, Clairton and East Liberty during after-school hours. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Gather materials for tutoring using books, internet and other resources in HCEF’s Learning Centers • Assist children, primarily elementary students, with one-on-one reading practice and homework assistance • Provide on-going support and motivation for improved academic success • Log all tutoring sessions - write a report detailing the interaction, achievements and concerns about the students’ performance • Track students’ reading levels and progress using Star Reading and Accelerated Reader software • Create and maintain files for students including their progress reports and all other information useful for assessment • Attend periodic staff meetings and trainings for information exchange among tutors, HCEF staff members and shelter staff • Ability to work at least 10 hours/week after-school Experience working in an after-school setting with at-risk youth preferred.
